I've never clicked in there, ever. Except by accident when I slipped. Never even noticed it.

Meh -- I just use "Watched threads" for established ones, and scan the "Active Topics" (which really means "new topics") on the right. That covers everything.

As far as the site design, if some link is placed in what is perceived to be a more prominent position, that would indicate they're trying to give it a boost. The ones that don't need help -- don't need it. It's not logical to assume they'd be listed in the order of most used.
