The Nordic culture is founded on working hard and taking responsibility. The welfare state, since it has been implemented, has gradually been destroying that culture. An example of this culture is being destroyed is evident when comparing Nordic people living in the US to their cousins living in the Nordic countries. There are about 12 million Nordic people living in the US, more than any population of any individual Nordic country. The Nordic American population’s forefathers were the poor and starving, so they left for America. Because their forefathers were poor, they should at the very least be poorer than their cousins living in Scandinavia, but this is not the case. What you find is that Nordic Americans are 50% more affluent because they are not living in the social democracy that is the Nordic countries. Nordic Americans have better social outcomes, almost half the unemployment rate, much lower high school dropout rates and they have much lower poverty levels. Also indicating that high taxes and big government (in the Nordics) reduces prosperity, as their cultures are the same, with different results.

The problem here is the equating socialist redistribution programs, with socialist economies. The Scandinavian nations are not socialist economies; Denmark has a freer economy than does the USA. Higher tax rates to support the redistributionist part, but far less business regulation than America.

Some people are eating their pets and feeding their children from garbage bins. Socialism has crippled Venezuela's once-thriving economy. Today, Venezuela is among the world's most tragically poor countries.


4. After Germany's defeat in WWII, it was divided into socialist East Germany and capitalist West Germany. West Germans had far greater income, wealth and human rights protections. In large numbers, East Germans tried to flee to West Germany, so much so that the East German government set up deadly mines and other traps to prevent escape. Few, if any, West Germans tried to flee to East Germany, and the West German government spent no resources preventing its citizens from leaving.


5. …there's North Korea and South Korea. North Korea's nominal per capita GDP is only 3.6 percent of South Korea's nominal per capita GDP of $23,838. There are few human rights protections for North Koreans. North Korea, like East Germany, has set up deadly mines and other traps to prevent its citizens from escaping.
