As written, the title could work, but it cannot be about a political party. It would have to mean "we have been calling those who believe in democracy, those who believe in democracy so long they...". That's all it can mean.

Then there's members of the Republican Party (which is not and never has been the "Republic Party"), which we call "Republicans" and not "republicans" which would mean "those who believe in republicanism". But then sometimes some wags call that party the "GOP" standing for "Grand Old Party". Why would you call a political party that when it's the younger of the two?
