We need to stop over-reacting to the Coronavirus.

Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who don’t understand...

It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics.

Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.

Novel viruses, come from animals.... the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem, Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity.. the RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off.

Now.... sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human... once that happens..we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, thats what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be..

H1N1 was deadly....but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too.

Fast forward.

Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”

This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity). Took off like a rocket. And this was because, Humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it.

And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs..

That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery AF. And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.

We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.

Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed...(honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation...

And let me end by saying....right now it’s hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it will). Who is to say, what it will do next.

Be smart folks... acting like you’re unafraid is so not sexy right now.

#flattenthecurve. Stay home folks... and share this to those that just are not catching on.
Flu still kills, vaccines or not.

The economy is being harmed by the Coronavirus hysteria created by the mainstream media. The virus itself will not harm our economy that much as long as we don't over-react. Most of the damage being done by the Coronavirus is being done by people talking about it and over-reacting. Contrast this with how well the world handled the flu pandemic of 1918. The stock market in the USA actually only dropped about 5% that year.

To put things into perspective, the 1918 flu killed about 50,000,000 people out of 1.6 billion. Today, that would be proportional to a virus killing about 215 million people worldwide. That sounds like it would be devastating, except if there was no global market crash in 1918, there is certainly no reason for us to panic and create one today.

We need to stop panicking, stoically let the virus run its course and keep working or we might suffer an economic depression.
If you look at past epidemics that were brought under control, you will find what people considered an over reaction at the time is exactly what stopped or slowed the spread. When you have an epidemic infecting 175,000 people in almost every country on earth and is growing at a rate of 7% every day there is no way of stopping or slowing it without using extreme measures. There was a window of a few weeks in the US when we could have dramatically slowed the spread, but we ignored it because it would have been an over-reaction since there was only 35 cases in a couple of states. A month later there were nearly 4000 cases in 48 states.

The Spanish influence was so devastating because so many countries had more important issues, namely WWI. The Sedition act of 1918 was used to silence the media. The government referred to it as the grip and urged people to go to work and just ignore it. In munition plants it was considered patriot to work while sick. The results was 116,000 Americans died in combat and 676,000 died of Spanish Influenza.

Letting a virus like the common cold run it's course which usually last only a few day is usually a good idea. But letting a disease with the potential of killing millions is not. The Spanish Influenza is a good example of an epidemic running it's course.

They did not shut down businesses nearly to this extent in 1918 and everything worked out fine. The Stock Market only dropped about 5% for the year.
If you mean the death of 678,000 Americans and 50 million worldwide in less than 3 years is just fine, you have very strange sense of values.

Worst case scenario is a few million Americans die. I don't know a single person whose life is worth the amount of damage that is being caused by shutting down the economy. We need to stop acting like children start living life as normal. Yes, a few million or more people may die, but that's their patriotic duty. I wish it didn't have to happen, but some times people need to die for the good of the country. These are also the weakest members of our nation. How much do they cost the US economy everyday that they wake up? They need to face up to reality that this may the one good thing they can do for our great country. Imagine if the men storming the beaches of Normandy were behaving similar to the snowflakes who are cowering in fear over a tiny little virus. Suck it up and go forward. We cannot let self-entitled snowflakes dictate how this country is run. Stop closing down businesses. Stop working from home. Stop subsidies to help those who refuse to do their JOBS so they can get money to pay their bills.

I am tired of long lines, increased hold times, and the smell of lysol. Let's end this madness that the democrats are causing just to make President Trump look bad.
I suspect if you had been laying on a gurney in a hospital for two days, gasping for breath because there were no ventilators, or available beds. you might have a very different outlook.

yes, but the vast majority of deaths from covid world wide have been people who were old AND had some other kind of medical issue. the question that is cannot be answered is: how many of those people would have died any way? maybe virus hastened their deaths, or maybe it didn't, there is no way we can ever know.

I go back to the OP, we are seeing an overreaction by governments at all levels, as well as businesses and sports arenas. No one wants to allow people to be in a large group and then have some of them come down with it. They are scared of being sued. this could be handled much better without the media and the lawyers.

Yes, it needs to be managed and people need to take sensible precautions. But shutting down all commerce is not the answer.

This virus has not affected as many americans as the every year flu or H1N1, bird flu, west nile, Sars, or any of the other humanity-ending pandemics that seem to occur every election year
Primarily because Trump has been reluctant to provide mass testing for Covid-19.

Does that sound like running government like a business?

U.S. Offered ‘Large Sum’ to German Company for Access to Coronavirus Vaccine Research, German Officials Say

"BERLIN — The Trump administration attempted to persuade a German firm developing a possible vaccine for coronavirus to move its research work to the United States, German officials said, raising fears in Berlin that President Trump was trying to assure that any inoculation would be available first, and perhaps exclusively, in the United States."

Trump has not been reluctant to get test kits out to every health facility. Where did you get that lie? His administration has taken aggressive action from the beginning and its been effective. Why can't you dem/libs put the bullshit politics aside for a few days and help with this?

the main doc, Fauci, said it best yesterday, you all are confused thinking that the tests cure the virus. get off the test kits. His words yesterday at the presser. So can you fking leftists in here move on? Please! you're just acting more stupid than usual. Sorry Red, I digressed on your post.

yes, but the vast majority of deaths from covid world wide have been people who were old AND had some other kind of medical issue.
So what? That doesn't speak to hospitalizations, nor does it speak to how many more would die without proper care.

Most of the people requiring hospitalization do not have co-existing illnesses. And the median age for hospitalizations, in the studies released, is about 45.

question: and please don't answer unless you know.

does the pneumonia shot prevent the pneumonia brought on by corona virus?

true, do you have those numbers? if so, post them.

Are you libs saying that all 330,000,000 americans must be tested for corona?

so ~400 black people died last year in Chicago, and you didn't give a rats ass at their deaths. Just in Chicago this year, less than three months, same time line as the virus, Homicides in Chicago: A list of every victim - Chicago Sun-Times
Homicides in Chicago: A list of every victim
This database lists names of every victim who was killed by another person within city limits. It is to be a comprehensive page compiled from information provided by disparate law enforcement and regional agencies that have a role with respect to Chicago homicides, including gun violence. The page will be updated daily, initially with information from the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office and updated with additional reporting.

Click "filter" for information on deaths by community area, method, race, gender, age or time of year.

This page is maintained by a combination of journalists at the Sun-Times.

There have been 88 homicides in Chicago in 2020.

Where the fk is your outrage son? that's one fking city. the numbers for this virus are 114 for the country. you are a leftist and therefore insensitive always, so you're faking this.
fk off now.

We only have numbers from studies that have been completed. In the one study done on Chinese patients, about 16.5% of the patients studied were hospitalized with severe illness, and only 39.1% of those had a co-existing illness. The median age for those with severe illness was 47.

On the phone now, will try to re-post link later. You may be able to find it earlier in the thread.

Just about the time Trump was calling the media reaction to the virus a hoax and comparing it to the common flu, South Korea was closing public libraries, museums, churches, day-care centers, and cancelling all major gatherings. In the first few days of March, schools and universities were closed. In major cities and towns checkpoints were set to check individuals for symptoms. People were being sent home if they didn't need to be on streets. Social distancing was being enforced in all major cities. Between March 4th and March 16, the number of reported new cases had dropped 90%. In the US, where response had been mostly local and spotted, new cases had increased 2800%. What the US is doing is based mostly on what was done in South Korea and few other places.

From what I have seen in the Seattle area, I believe the number of new cases will drop significantly over next two weeks. All restaurants, bars, schools, sporting events have been closed. In grocery stores and pharmacies which are one of the few retail establishments operating normally, social distancing is very apparent.

He never called the virus a hoax, he called the democrats rhetoric on it, "the latest democrat hoax".

the misquoting that goes on here is limitless.
