..Wealth Gap Among Races Has Widened Since Recession

I am going to tell you something that may seem preposterously obvious at first, but give it a minute to sink in and bear in mind the KIND of society we have and what it takes to make money in most cases.

Ready?

The number one cause of poverty in this nation is that so many people have very little money.

define poverty please.

your definition and mine may be quite different.

Of course it'll be different. Poverty is like porn, you know it when you see it.

But that's why you run from thread to thread asking for Definitions to common words.

What is poverty? What is racism? What is torture? etc etc

So much for democrats being there for the poor and minorities. only in words, only on the campaign trail

WASHINGTON — Millions of Americans suffered a loss of wealth during the recession and the sluggish recovery that followed. But the last half-decade has proved far worse for black and Hispanic families than for white families, starkly widening the already large gulf in wealth between non-Hispanic white Americans and most minority groups, according to a new study from the Urban Institute.

“It was already dismal,” Darrick Hamilton, a professor at the New School in New York, said of the wealth gap between black and white households. “It got even worse.”

Given the dynamics of the housing recovery and the rebound in the stock market, the wealth gap might still be growing, experts said, further dimming the prospects for economic advancement for current and future generations of Americans from minority groups.

And as long as sheep continue to think "their" party isn't the least bit responsible, the wealth gap will continue to grow. They're all in bed with Wall Street, every last damned one of them and that includes your party.

Let's say the wealth gap was reduced in half how would that help people in poverty?

Can't agree; definitions are essential.

Until something has a name, we can't talk about it: autism, for instance.

"Terrorism" is undergoing that process of definition now, and high time.

Poverty is a grossly underdefined word in America, and probably not applicable, compared with its reality in Bangladesh and Congo. Why even bother to talk about "poverty" in America!

It wouldn't - the goal is to destroy the middle class and let us scrap for the crumbs while they fight it out for the real wealth. Not far from "Mission Accomplished." Wedge Politics and Wedge Economics has worked, as seen on the pages of this forum.

Of course they are but PERSONAL OPINIONS on definitions are not. The only time personal opinions on definitions are requested is to turn this into a debate about the person and not the words.

Once again, just like every other douche bag, you look at something and say "it's not as bad as...." and attempt to suggest that until America is as poor as the Congo then America isn't "really" poor.

I guess now we have to have a pissing match on what the difference is between "poor" and "really poor". What's the diff? ...because you said so

of course none of that was passed or even proposed during obamas first two years when he had the super majority and didn't need a single republican vote

During the first two years of his administration, Obama was trying to stop the free-fall of the US economy and get the Affordable Health Care Act passed. You can't do everything at once.

so he elected to stop this freefall by not passing any regulations. I thought you said the freefall was cause by regualtions the republicans took away? if that was the case, which it wasn't, couldn't he have just put them back?

5 years later and the brain dead are still trying to pass all Obama's failures off on someone, anyone else.

This is a failure of an economic system that politicians are trying to rescue. Some of us don't think it is even possible, because the system has failed.

A welfare, deduction, subsidy economic system will always fail... I agree.

Cheap wages are a subsidy to big corporations, as are the entitlements that those cheap wages allow people to qualify for.

Social programs with means tests - like food stamps and Medicaid, are expensive to administer BECAUSE of the means test. This is why it would be better to raise wages than to have a food stamp program because more money would get into the hands of those who need it.

I'm amused by people who are surprised that the rich get richer in a bad economy.

The fact of the matter is that in an economic downturn, the wealthy have increased opportunities to make money because they have capital to buy things like depressed housing. Down here in sunny Florida, investors have been gobbling up foreclosed homes at bargain rates. They'll make a fortune when the economy finally does come back. Poor people can't do that. They don't have capital to invest.

Wow! Who would have thought that one could use money to make money? One can also use their brawn, brain, skills, and gumption to make money, but that takes effort and dedication. Better to just envy those with money, and make excuses for why you don't have any.

The solution s called "self improvement'. You go to school and learn some skills that pay better. You give up drinking beer and partying, save some of that extra money, and look for a good investment to risk that money in. Soon, you become part of that crowd that has capital to invest.

Over regulation makes it extremely difficult and expensive to establish and/or grow new businesses, and the inability to establish and/or grow new businesses impacts all ehtnic groups, but especially ethnic groups that are on the cusp of entrepreneurship.

Bullshit. The US job market is the least regulated among the G8 countries, none of which have the wealth gaps that the US has, but all of which have higher minimum wages, universal health care, mandated worker protections and stronger unions

The wealth gap in the US exists precisely because of outsourcing, weak labor laws, weak unions, and a tax code which favours the wealthy. The Republicans have resisted every effort to pass worker protection legislation or shore up union protections. They're the ones who put the tax code into place which has lead to this transfer of wealth, and they're the ones who block every effort to change the status quo.

We aren't talking about the job market, we are talking about establishing and growing a business. New and growing businesses hire people, and when people are being hired, they benefit, their families benefit, and the community benefits. People who do not have jobs are not too concerned with worker protection or shoring up unions. They want jobs and a pay check.

The wealth gap exists because people who have money use that money to make more money, while the common folk are looking for a job, or looking to keep the job they have. Over regulation of business hurts those that are trying to start a business, or grow a small business. Small business is the driver for putting people back to work.

We have so many regulations in this country today, that the government cannot even catelog all of them. And, they are turning out hundreds more regulations every month.

Please provide examples of regulations that you would eliminate, and how that elimination would have a net positive effect on Americans.
