According to most doctors I've read or heard from, there is never a reason for a third trimester abortion in which the health of the mother would be in jeopardy. At that point, the baby is viable to live outside the womb so labor can be induced or a C-Section performed if required. That's why I find the NY and proposed laws in VA so disturbing despite the fact I am pro-choice. I also don't like the cult like behavior exhibited by the extremists among the pro-choice crowd. Lighting up the Word Trace Center to celebrate the legal viability of aborting a child at 8 months and 30 days is a symptom of how sick our society is becoming.

The thing of it is that the pro-choice proponents of death aren't fully in charge even if they think they are. What would happen if the "choice" fanatics got hold of the Constitution? First they come for the 1st and 2nd trimester babies and then they take the full term infants and then they start killing newborns. Will they start killing Jews again or maybe the old and infirm? If Filipino women are dying from abortion complications and abortion is prohibited, they are breaking the law. Drugs are illegal too and people die from those, so screw them and their bad choices.

So to a degree, you are half right. Most of the "Health of the mother" abortions probably happen in the second trimester... usually, what they are aborting for in the third trimester is serious genetic deformities like Down Syndrome, Tay-Sachs, Spina Bifida, Brittle Bone Disease...

Again, can't say I blame any parent for ending a pregnancy under those circumstances...

I think once you let non-doctors legislate this issue, that's the camel's nose under the tent. Stop Trimester abortions? How about second? How about when the fetus has a heartbeat? Or can feel pain?

Let the laws get written on emotional rather than medical standards, and that's pretty much where you end up.

Gosnell worked in a state where they ban abortions after week 24. He got business because the reputable providers in his area refused to do later abortions.

But when they put him on trial, despite being a drug-dealing quack who killed and maimed his patients,and kept all the dead fetuses around in pickle jars, they were unable to get convictions on most of the charges related to fetus killing. They started out with 100 charges, got whittled down to 7 by the grand jury, judge threw out 3 more, and the jury refused to convict on one.

Then they had to cut him a sweetheart deal on sentencing to keep him from appealing the verdict.
