Every now and then as I have obtained my education, both formal and later on more selectively, I have had to deal with a teacher who knew less about the subject than I did. I always found that annoying and frustrating that I was wasting my time.

Is the purpose of education to salve what is thought to be the self esteem of the students? To reinforce their prejudices or, worse, to instill prejudices into them? To encourage them to see themselves as different? Is that not counter productive to helping people be all they can be?

Or is the purpose of education to equip people to learn, prepare them to become useful, responsible, productive members of society with choices and options to choose what dreams and possibilities are out there for them. Is true self-esteem understanding one's own experience? Or does it come out of actually accomplishing something? Succeeding at something? Believing one is capable of achieving objectives and goals and then doing it?

It seems to me that the best teacher, regardless of skin color, is not the one who 'relates' to his/her students but who informs them of the world that is available to them and helps them understand that the choice is theirs. If we are going to have 'cultural studies' at all, let's structure them to that end.
