Who is the funniest comedian ever ?

The list is too long...

Bob Newhart's standup was exceptional.

Setting aside his drugging women for sex, Bill Cosby's standup was legendary.

George Carlin's early stuff was great.

Richard Pryor, enough said.

Sam Kinison was a true original.

Eddie Murphy at his peak...

Bert Kreischer, Bill Burr, Patrice O'Neal, Anthony Jeselnik, Lewis Black, Tom Segura, Kevin Hart...

Iliza Shlesinger, Nikki Glaser, Christina Pazsitzky...

All of them are the funniest in their own way...

However...

Hands down, the funniest and smartest comedian working today is Dave Chappelle.
Good list.
I remember listening to Carlin when I was a kid... what a funny man. Until he wasn't. His last 10 years or so was just bitter rants and dark hatred.

I've been saying the very same thing about Carlin since before he died. In the end, he was just angry and bitter and utterly lacking in humor.

Who do you think is the funniest person ever ? Looking back from 2021 I'm going to have to say Robin Williams. It's very sad the way his life ended, but I'll always remember him as the funniest person ever and I'm sure the people that were close to him miss him dearly.

Williams used to annoy me. He was basically just trying to be zany.

My favorite comedian was George Carlin.

I don't know I think he was spot on even in his bitterness.

That might be because you agree with what he said.
But what he was saying was based on deep hatred. Not to mention equally /deeply hypocritical.

But I can understand why.

He was dying slowly of heart failure and I think at the root of it all comedians start from a place of pain and their comedy is how they dealt with it. That certainly is true of Robin Williams.

But I have also seen Artists not be consumed by bitterness at the end.

Warren Zevon comes to mind. if you ever get a chance to listen to his last album, The Wind, I I highly recommend it.

Carlin became my ex father-in-law.
A Class A jerk. Negative, hateful, angry, bitter just generally speaking hated the world. And yet, somehow people paid money to listen to him spend an hour and a half going through the list of what is wrong with everything.
Not for me.

I thought that those observations were pretty accurate which to me makes them funny.

The world is absurd to me the way it is.

You may be referring to some of the times when he was
coked up and acting over the top, but when he was just being himself
nobody was quicker at creating punchlines on the fly.
I've seen him on TV later in his career and he would always resort to wandering around the set and doing those little high pitched voices he always did It's just something I never found to be that funny

I prefer more social commentary humor I guess.

VERY fine list, thank- you.

There is no greatest.
Instead there is a list of the very best.

On that list would be Richard Pryor, Don Rickles, Bill Cosby, Redd Fox, Jonathon Rivers, Bill Burr, Eddie Murphy.... among others.
I am absolutely a fan of Redd Fox and Bill Burr. They are top ten for sure.

Well... He was a very left leaning person, and didn't like the insanity that he saw coming. So he attacked it. You have to actually have the mindset that those people were crazy already to kind of see the humor. Lord knows he isn't for everybody.
