Figure skating is a century-old sport and it's customary for enthusiastic fans to throw flowers at the ice link to show their appreciation after skaters' performances. Young girls called "flower retrievers" are in charge of collecting flowers and gifts for skaters and their tasks are similar to ball kids at a major tennis tournament, making sure that sporting events are not hampered by loose flowers and balls.

Skaters are given instructions as Skate Canada held on-ice auditions for "flower retrievers", following the announcement of Joannie Rochette as "athlete ambassador" for the 2014 Canadian Figure Skating Championships to be held in Ottawa from January 9-15.
