He lost a leg in Gettyburg while pulling off either the most boneheaded (or brilliant) move of the battle when, on the second day, he moved his 3rd Corp forward of the Yankee line.

Sickles's leg, along with a cannonball similar to the one that shattered it, on display at the National Museum of Health and Medicine.....Sickles visited it often.
