Why Republican must shut down government

In a nutshell.....They Lied

The lied to their constituents that they could repeal Obamacare. They knew that once the Supreme Court ruled on Obamacare, there was nothing they could do. John Boehner even admitted that it was a done deal

But rather than move on to more important issues (jobs?) they campaigned on repealing Obamacare. They have to make some sort of a token gesture to show they were serious about repealing. So the country has to suffer to cover up for their lie

You have to stop getting your news from Rachel Maddow. There are a lot of Republicans, and maybe you can find a few who actually said this. I don't know, you didn't provide a link. But what most of them said was they would vote to repeal or at least de-fund Obama care. Rachel is to be taken as entertainment value only. She's like Gilligan's Island.

I suspect your link is correct:

A standard policy for wellness and catastrophic coverage for an unexpected, unavoidable ailment or accident could have been provided for a fraction of what Obamacare coverage costs, Roy added. "Obama care forces insurers to offer products that carry all sorts of bells and whistles that most people don't want but everyone will now need to pay for."

However, if so, it's an argument to let Obama destroy himself, and take the senate in 14 and the WH in 16.

maybe, and thats what some in the GOP are thinking. The problem is that the longer ACA remains in force, the harder it will be to undo it.

You could always make it better

But Republicans don't want any part of that

Repealing it is the best way to make it better. I always like that leftist talking point though. Assign the Republicans the task of improving socialism. It can't be done.

In forty years they will be holding up signs like this only substitute Medicare to Healthcare Exchanges:

On the other hand, liberals like to hold up signs like this:

Politically, it would be great if Reid could construct some sort of poison pill such as expanding Obamacare to cover dental and vision insurance or eldercare in lieu of children; get it passed then send that to the House and let them either swallow it whole or get blamed for shutting down the Congress.

In short, call their bluff. They're picking the fight so bust them in the chops instead of being Mr. Nice Guy and politely letting the ACA stay like it is. You've got the "ball and the mo' " so take it out for a spin and see what teh GOP does next... In about 3 days of shutdown and hilatious public opinion; they'll be begging to fund the original Obamacare.

The sad truth is that that Congress has become so disfuctional that shutting down the government will largly go unnoticed, except by those who will be laid off. I really have nothing that I need from the feds, since my passport is up to date. My SS check will still be deposited in my bank, my Medicare will still pay my doctor bills, the USPS will remain in business, and so will the Border Patrol and airport security. As far as I know, the federal courts and the air traffic controllers will not be affected. You know that they are not going to shut down the IRS, food safety inspectors, or anything else that is in place to protect us from injury or death from terrorists, tainted consumer products, or unsealed Tylonol bottles. In fact, I would be hard pressed to name anything that matters that will stop during a government shutdown. The only thing that I feel sure about is the backlash that would come from the public toward the Republicans, just like it did the last time they did it.

I wonder if a government shutdown would stop agricultural subsidies to wealthy congressmen who own megafarms in the Midwest?

How about a novel idea.......................

Obama finally pass a damned budget......................

CR's continue throughout his presidency.

No budget to hold his feet to the fire toooooooooooooooooooooooo...............

Must be nice to be the king.....No budget with CR's to spend as he please's.

It's goo to be the King.

"Obama finally pass a damned budget......................"

You seem to not know how the US government budjeting process works.

To begin with, it is Congress that passes continuing resolutions.

Second, it is how they have been doing it since it was made into law that this is how they do it.

United States budget process - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"A budget resolution is a concurrent resolution that binds Congress, but is not a law, and so does not require the President's signature. The budget resolution serves as a blueprint for the actual appropriation process, and provides Congress with some control over the appropriations process. No new spending authority, however, is provided until appropriation bills are enacted.
Once both houses pass the resolution, selected Representatives and Senators negotiate a conference report to reconcile differences between the House and the Senate versions. The conference report, in order to become binding, must be approved by both the House and Senate"

I was suprised too. They don't pass a "budget" like we would think. It is always done by resolutions.

If you search around, there is more info on it.

October approaches and it time for the Republican Shutdown of Government Show. It's like Groundhog Day II. When Bill Murray's clock radio goes off at 6 a.m. and Sonny and Cher's tune "I've got you Babe" plays in the '90s classic "Groundhog Day," perhaps the radio should have been tuned into the latest news from Washington.
Government shutdown: Again? Seriously? - CNN.com

Healthcare exchanges open next Tuesday. It's simply to late to stop the implementation of the law. With the opening of the exchanges most of the law will have been implemented.

8 out of 10 Americans don't think shutting government is the way to solve our differences. However, House Republicans don't agree. With midterm elections approaching, this is a dangerous move for the GOP.

If Obamacare is going to fail, as they predict, they should let it fail, swept the midterm elections and repeal it. What they're doing now is just plain dumb.

In Break With 92-Year Tradition, Congress Will Kick Off Budget Process - NationalJournal.com

While other Presidents have been late on proposing a budget, Obama makes a habbit about it. There are also 12 appropriations bills to be signed for Discresionary spending.

Either way, the new way now is temporary measures instead of for a year.

While I'll agree that there are procedures, his not presenting the proposal is a complete break with tradition in this country. Forcing Congress and the Senate to kick it off because he refuses to do his job.

The House's refusal to move on the budget has nothing to do with when Obama submitted it. Republicans were planning a government shutdown over Obamacare before they even saw the budget.

What are you talking about?

Congress is the one that controls the budget. There is no single budget anymore. All there is are resolutions.

You need to go learn about it.

A bit more on the process

Stages of the Congressional Budget Process | Budget.House.Gov

I had found a really nice explanation, once, of the process, that detailed when and how the law was revised.

The gist of it was that the process has been made more manageable for and by Congress by breaking it up into parts. Each part is submitted and passed separately as a general outline of funds. Then, they go into committee where the details of the spending are worked out.

"1. Adoption of the Budget Resolution. House and Senate Committees hold hearings on the President’s budget and the Budget Committees report a concurrent resolution on the budget that sets each committee’s allocation of spending authority for the next fiscal year and aggregate spending and revenue levels for 5 years. The budget resolution also establishes aggregate totals with respect to revenues and spending for the entire federal budget. This resolution, once adopted, is not law, as it is not signed by the President. The allocations, enforceable through points of order, establish the framework to consider spending and revenue bills on the House and Senate floor.

2. Passage of Appropriation Bills. In May the House begins consideration of the 12 annual appropriation bills for the next fiscal year based on the discretionary spending allocation in the budget resolution. As these bills move through hearings, markups, Floor consideration, and conference they are constrained by the levels and allocations in the budget resolution and the enforcement of the Budget Act and through House and Senate rules.

3. Consideration of Reconciliation Legislation. If the spending and revenue levels in the budget resolution require changes in existing law, the resolution would contain instructions to committees to report legislation containing such statutory changes. Whether for tax increases or decreases, deficit reduction, mandatory spending increases or decreases or adjustments in the public debt limit, this process has been used to focus many agents on one goal, often in a large bill.

4. Consideration of Authorization Legislation. Congress considers numerous measures authorizing the appropriation of funds on a myriad of programs each fiscal year. This decision-making is constrained by the Budget Act and through House and Senate rules."

Republicans lied when they conducted over 40 votes to repeal Obamacare. They lied to their constituents as they conducted farce vote after farce vote to repeal a law that they do not even come close to having the votes

great...so all obama's broken promises are lies

why is obama holding the government hostage over one program?

The shame of it is the complete lack of understanding of how economics, the money supply and taxes really functions. This is clearly true for conservatives and Republican Congressional members. This is likely true for Democrats as well, though the are often right but not necessarily for the right reason.

The fact is that lower taxes will not result in higher standard of living for anyone. When taxes are lowered, prices go up. Prices are a function of the total production and the total supply of money available for purchase. When the average individual gets a raise, everyone is getting a raise. Prices then just go up.

The only thing that really matters is the employment level, how much is being produced, and what is being produced. When less stuff is produced, there is less to consume. It doesn't matter how much money everyone has. The money simply counts the stuff.

This should be pretty fing obvious to anyone that takes a moment to honestly think about it. The only time you getting a raise really matters is if you are the only one getting it or it pushes you up higher compared to the average. And as lower taxes generally applies to everyone at the same time, it means nothing. (It means a shitload if only capital gains taxes are lowered. Then a smaller group of taxpayers are paying less compared to the average.)

The real shame is that people will never get this.

I think it's because they're ideologues. Either that, or they're crazy. Probably a combination of both.

ANOTHER phony crisis costs the country ANOTHER 1-1.5 per cent in growth for a year...so they can say Obama's policies are hurting the economy. Great job, Pub a-holes and silly hater dupes...

That's the main thing.

The baggers have the economy by the balls, by bringing things to the brink. Take ANY industry and follow the paper and chances are the government (or a contractor) is purchasing something from it.

ALL of my contractor accounts (12 total) are at a spending freeze until they figure out what is going to happen with the shut down. And they are vocally tired of this happening ever 5-6 months.

Baggers are writing their own ticket right out the door.

the hell with trying to keep this administration in check...Just let them spend us into bankruptcy..

I think that is the cold water these people who think money grows on trees needs...

screw it all

The non-partisan CBO has released a study saying that obamacare will bankrupt the country. and I have news for you Frankie, its not going to be free for you, barry lied to you about that too.

Let's just say for the sake of argument that, while imperfect, Obamacare turns out to be something that most people, including middle class conservatives, like because it allows both them and their family members to have affordable healthcare which doesn't price them out of the market when they have preexisting conditions or when they get sick. Additionally, they no longer have to worry about a medical bankruptcy like the stories they've heard from other family members and friends. What happens to GOP credibility at that point after having predicted economic and healthcare Armageddon if Obamacare was allowed to go through?
