If Trump loses it will be because he was viewed as being too far right. He won in 2016 precisely because he wasn't a Ted Cruz (not that I don't respect Ted). He needs to listen more to Rand Paul, who has been right about people Trump shouldn't have chosen (such as John Bolton and others). He was in a really good spot when he was viewed as a libertarian type president. If he can take 5-15% more votes from younger voters, black, hispanic and those who might generally vote Dem, it will be a cakewalk. That's the sweet spot, he can't throw away 3.5 years of effort just to appease a few.

It's so easy to do also. It's not as if he becomes an alt-left president, he just has to sprinkle in important "American Values" (at least as the world views them). Support for the constitution, protecting American industries and foreign abuses, demanding fair treatment of all citizens by police and the courts. These are age old principles passed on by your Founders. All of it universally supported by voters.

What always sinks politicians is listening to Special Interests and boutique interests, be it unions or talking heads and NOT listening to voters. I doubt the Rust Belt care much about lawlessness in major cities, they care about the poisons being shipped in from China while their industries are shipped out. They care about healthcare and civil liberty and who will stay out of their lives and focus on the threats posed by foreign nations. He's president, he isn't the mayor or governor.

It was also surprising for him to give credit to Cuomos handling of the Wuhan Virus. It's an odd position to take when the entire U.S numbers have been grossly inflated due to that states numbers. While Cuomo blames Trump, Trump seems to give him a pass (at least in recent interviews). He has to call balls and strikes and be precise with what was done well and what wasn't.

The true direction of this campaign and the nature of what voters want will be best gleaned after the first debate. There are some decisions by Trump that I don't understand. I thought he made a few errors in 2016, but he seems less on point this time. He must remember he has to run on NOT being a politician, even after four years of being president.

Trumps political instincts are generally sharp, but, after so long as president, away from the every day citizen and private life, he can be susceptible to missing the mark. He needs that 2016 thinking.
