In part this is due to the decline of heavy industries in the U.S., in part to union membership being a tiny fraction of what it was in the war and postwar period. Today the nation is divided in many ways, and the difference between rich and poor, stock holders & property owners and barely surviving low-skilled wage workers, is great. This despite tremendous technological advances. Capital and big money absolutely rules … using both parties.
