With proposal to penalize men for masturbating, legislator aims to shake up health debate

I knew it had to be a Liberal....

You're saying only "Liberals" understand satire?

Interesting theory. I've read about the studies saying only intelligent people grok irony.

Do go on, make your case. :eusa_think:

When it comes to issues related to health, state Rep. Jessica Farrar says that men should have to undergo the same “unnecessary” and “invasive” procedures that she says Texas women are subjected to under recently passed state laws.

That’s why the the Houston Democrat on Friday filed House Bill 4260, which would fine men $100 for masturbating and create a required booklet for men with medical information related to the benefits and concerns of a man seeking a vasectomy, a Viagra prescription or a colonoscopy. The bill would also let doctors invoke their "personal, moralistic, or religious beliefs" in refusing to perform an elective vasectomy or prescribe Viagra, among other proposed requirements in the bill.

While Farrar knows her "proposed satirical regulations" will not become law, she hoped the bill's filing would at least foster a deeper discussion about what should be a priority during session years.

.....Farrar said her bill, titled the “Man’s Right To Know Act,” takes the argument that “we’re looking at the sanctity of life,” a term that has already been highly debated this legislative session as several Texas Republicans have proposed legislation aimed at abortions.

"Protecting the life of unborn children should not be a controversial issue," state Sen. Charles Perry, R-Lubbock, said last month.

In proposing a fine for masturbation, Farrar says that if a man’s semen is not used to create a pregnancy, “then it’s a waste ... because that semen can be used — and is to be used — for creating more human life.”

Did anyone else automatically recall Every Sperm is Sacred after reading this?

If you happen to never have seen it:

Her entire argument is a straw man. She's putting on nothing more than a show. This is the equivalent of a hell room play a church would put on, just another straw man show made for their own audience, despite claiming otherwise.

That's the whole point. That's why she herself describes the bill as, and I quote, "satirical". Amazing how many heads this flies over.

It's a straw man. Fake argument. Equates a gamete to a fetus. Yes ithe BILL is intended to be satirical, but the premise behind the bill is a straw man argument, intended to be a serious argument, to quote "start a conversation, and get people thinking." So is it a double satire statement, meaning that not only is the bill fake, but the argument behind it fake as well? That would kind of defeat the purpose wouldn't it?

Methinks you're overanalyzing. One might make a satirical demonstration or one might make a strawman argument --- you can't do both. Can't do both because of the two only the strawman is meant to be taken seriously. What we have here is satire that wasn't meant to be taken seriously. The message within is, "what if we treated men the same way X is treating women?" The argument is implicit, not direct, and it is that the approach (of her target) is male-biased.

Still no answer on this one. Let alone the choice of David Tennant to make the point of ---- whatever the point was supposed to be. :dunno:

is it wrong, to let girl friends practice their, "reach around" technique, to help us keep from getting fined?

The bill is meant to be satire, the premise (straw man) of it in the authors words is meant to start a conversation, which is how you stated "what if we treated men the same way x is treating women." Which is The straw man, equating a gamete to a fetus, then saying how would you like it if we did this to you, even though it is not at all the same thing. A straw man with a false equivalency.

As I'm sure, at least I hope, she's not stupid enough to think that a gamete and a fetus are the same...this is nothing more than political theater aimed to get the base wild up. Particularly those stupid enough, or have cast all critical thinking aside to think that this is a valid argument.
