The place of work,’ of ‘endeavor,’ in society.
1.But first……One of the most important ‘defining characteristics’ of communism/socialism/Democrat doctrine is their failed understanding of human nature. Is it the aim of most human beings to sit around and be given every need by the state?
On the Right, we have:
“Earned success is the secret to meaningful happiness. The government can improve your net worth with a check, but it cannot improve your self-worth.”
Jonah Goldberg
While on the Left: ‘freedom’ from work.
“When questioned about the comment of Teamsters’ President James P. Hoffa on how ACA is “destroy[ing] the foundation of the 40-hour work week,” she [Pelosi] smiled and declared that it was “a liberation” for the American people:
“Overwhelmingly, for the American people, this is a liberation, this is life, healthy life, liberty, the freedom to pursue your happiness, which could be follow your passion for good rather than follow your palate and be constrained by your policy. It’s about wellness. It’s about prevention, it’s about a healthier America.” http://www.thesongofbrokenglass.com/blog/2013/09/28/on-working-less-and-the-pursuit-of-happiness/
2. So, according to the Democrats/Left, all of America on the dole is perfect!
But experience and reality paint a very different picture: From Peter Ferrara, “America’s Ticking Bankruptcy Bomb,” chapter five.
‘Welfare’ as a wholly owned subsidiary of the government, and its main result is the incentivizing of a disrespect for oneself, and for the entity that provides the welfare. As more folks in a poor neighborhood languish with little or no work, entire local culture begins to change: daily work is no longer the expected social norm. Extended periods of hanging around the neighborhood, neither working nor going to school becoming more and more socially acceptable.
Since productive activity not making any economic sense because of the work disincentives of the welfare plantation, other kinds of activities proliferate: drug and alcohol abuse, crime, recreational sex, illegitimacy, and family breakup are the new social norms, as does the culture of violence."
3. Coming to terms with the two very different views of the value of work allows the thinking individual to choose to vote for the Right or the Left. Is a job merely the avenue to put food on the table…..starvation has never, including in the depth of Roosevelt’s Depression, been a problem….
Or is there some more intrinsic value to work, something that individuals find that gives them a feeling of self-worth?
My answer?
