After the Fed admitted over a year ago that the US unemployment rate (which in 2012 was supposed to be a rate hike "threshold" once it hit 6.5% and is now at 5.1%) has become irrelevant in a country where a record 94 million people have left the labor force, and with the Fed poised to hike rates even though US hourly wages have not only not increased for the past 7 years, but for the vast majority of the labor force continue to decline, some have asked - is there any labor-related chart that matters any more?

The answer: a resounding yes, only it is none of the conventional charts that algos and sometimes humans look at.

The one chart that matters more than ever,has little to nothing to do with the Fed's monetary policy, but everything to do with the November 2016 presidential elections in which the topic of immigration, both legal and illegal, is shaping up to be the most rancorous, contentious and divisive.

Selling the manufacturing plant to Chinese companies who then dismantled it and fired all the previous workers is how it is done. And itisnt just the Chinese, if you havent been constantly inebriated you might have heard about some companies shutting down their American companies and sending them to Mexico as well. Then there is Nike in Vietnam and a host of companies making products elsewhere.

Problem with hiring a Mexican roofing crew (for instance) is that they are good and cheap. Show up to work every day and Sunday. Don't complain. Can't speak English so you don't have to talk to but one guy who does speak English.

Did I mention they work cheap and do good work?

On top of all that, they like to roof.

All the above is why they are here. And American youth dont want to roof or speak Spanish.

I ran a siding crew for a while. Guy who owned the company also hired. And he hired black men whenever he could. He hired them and I sent them home a few days later. For not showing up on time, no tools, no skills etc.

Wtf are you gonna do when you need good labor on a construction job? Hire older white guys you can't afford or hire Mexicans.

Sometimes he (business owner) would hire white guys. Usually ex felons with no drivers licence and full sleeved tattoos with a skin head look that would scare the homeowner. Or they could only work half a day cause they had to see their; attorney, doctor, probation officer or case worker. Or attend a meeting. Oh and could they get paid for their five hours worked. Right now.

That doesn't include the drunks and druggies.

Not a Mexican in the above groups. I am sure they are out there.
But the ones I met where here to work and that's what they did.

Lol, yeah they did a good job, huh? How many layers of tar paper did they put down? Are the shingles straight? Did the drip edge have a double layer of shingles? Is there flashing along the drip edge? Did they peal the plastic off the shingle edges to allow them to seal together? Are the nail heads sealed? If you have a ridge vent, did they put the end caps in? If you have a chimney, you got a cricket for it installed?

You get what you pay for dude. Good luck with all the leaks you going to have in a few years. Because if they ripped the tar sheeting or felt, cheap labor jobs are not going to tell you or replace it. Hope none of the dudes left cans behind your drywall in the frame. It can make an awful racket.

Wow things must have really changed sine I did dry wall and roofing. I cant tell you how many bad brick walls I have seen illegals put up, or how many bad AC installations I have had when the work crew was illegal.

I do know I have seen a ton of cheap lazy ass things done by these guys skipping features and taking short cuts.

But who knows, maybe all that has magically changed since I worked construction and the employers have means to teleport to Mexico in five years and let them know if things went bad, unlike an American company that employes Americans and has them around for decades.

Oh, what am I talking about! You know that accountability for labor in a company only needs to extend for a few years. What could go wrong?
