So many young women I know had their first sexual experiences when they were drugged and raped at parties when they were 13 and 14. Who never dared leave their drinks alone at raves.

The reason the #metoo movement has resonated so strongly with women, is that there are so very many of us. My experiences were mild compared to theirs. There wasn’t this level of entitlement and violence against very young girls and women that we see today.

Every sport seems to be having issues with allowing predators access to children if the individual is part of a “winning team”. The pattern is always the same. Children complain and nothing is done until something dramatic happens to make the abuse public.

I was a child athlete. After my father died when I was 11, my swim coach became my father figure. For out of town meets, I always rode in his car, and he always bought my dinner on the way home. I was so fortunate to have had such a kind, compassionate man in my life. Three of his swimmers went on to the Canadian Olympic Team. One of them is one of the top diving coaches in the world. When the Town where I grew up had a day to honour Coach Clarke, 200 of his swimmers showed up.

This is the sports experience kids should have. Not getting together to read victim impact statements as the abusive coach is sentenced for child abuse.

I would guess that it can be hard to find qualified female coaches in some places. I could easily be wrong about that, but it is an impression I've gotten.

It wasn’t hard for my coach. Both him and his assistant coach were part of “swimming families”. Their wives and children were all involved, time keeping, organizing rosters, etc. His assistant coach also headed up the learn to swim program, and the assistant’s son was the head lifeguard.

I compare this with my cousin’s experience. She was a championship level rower. Her coach was sexually involved with team members, played favourites and generally abused his Team Canada credentials.
