There are absolutely going to be excesses based on the #metoo movement. That is pretty much inevitable. People always seem to go from one extreme toward another, rather than from an extreme to a balance.

That said, the fact that some people take this trend of revealing sexual abuse too far, or use it to make false accusations, does not discredit every story of abuse.

I disagree with the idea of automatically assuming any charges of abuse are valid. Every instance should be looked at based on the individual merits. Unfortunately, sexual abuse can be extremely hard to prove. All too often, it is a 'he said/she said' sort of scenario (or 'she/she' or 'he/he', whatever). The current climate has gone too far toward simply accepting any story and vilifying the accused, IMO. I think that #metoo has gained so much traction because sexual abuse has been far too prevalent, particularly with people in positions of power. I don't think this came out of nowhere; it is a reaction to an all-too-real issue. Society seems to be swinging the pendulum too far to the other side in an attempt to correct, but hopefully that will eventually lead to a more proper balance in the end.

Dismissing most or all claims of sexual abuse without judging the individual merits of each accusation is as wrongheaded as accepting most or all claims of sexual abuse without judging the individual merits of each accusation.

They could well have been fake. Proving slander might be difficult, particularly for such long-ago accusations. Or perhaps some were true, and some not; Moore might not see a point in taking some of the accusers to court for slander but not others, as that might be seen as admitting guilt for those accusers he does not claim slandered him.

There are too many assumptions made in many of these cases, it seems to me.
