Political ideology is significantly heritable. Your son is not the CLONE of his father, now is he? This doesn't mean that political ideology is 100% transmittable from parents to child.
This means that conservative parents can pop out a Patti Davis and liberal parents can pop out an Alex P. Keaton. It's not a one-way street where kids of conservative parents "discover" liberalism and enlightenment.
You're absolutely right. Besides, your example, with political families, is a false equivalency. Those families have an economic interest in the whole family being supportive of a certain party. Average families, I would submit, are much more diverse. Children grow up, go out into the world, and are shaped by experiences from there. They vote in what are their best interests as adults, same as their parents did.
