I'm not painting this guy in any light, I'm refuting statements people seem to be making up about this guy and his family willy-nilly. Yes, people were there. Yes, when they were there the family asked them to go to various places. What I have seen zero evidence of is the family asking for armed people to come down and defend them. That has not been produced by anyone, but has been alluded to by several progressives here, or in another thread.

The real story here is that government kicks people off land, usually claiming environmental or protected species excuses and then they often sell the land to wealthy people who donated to their campaign. The government constantly looks for reasons to separate us from our money and property. The belief is that you can't fight it or you lose. It's like letting criminals make the rules for investigating and trying their case. The one who makes the rules wins every time. So, these people realized why the founding fathers gave them liberty and they used it as intended. Not pretty, but it's big government that pushed them to this point by removing all other options for people to speak out and question their authority.

His comments weren't racist. Blacks were agricultural workers long after slavery ended. Blacks and poor whites worked in fields until they were replaced by low paid Mexicans who immediately demanded that agricultural work convey dignity. Just because a majority disagrees with you, doesn't give you the right to ignore it.

Our founders knew the value and the perils of civil disobedience. That's why they were so careful to implement a system that allowed a redress of grievances without it. Bundy has had his case heard at least five times - and he's has lost every time. Every congress since the 1940s has had the opportunity to repeal these laws that they enacted. Every voter has had the opportunity to support candidates and press them on this issue.

The system is not broken in THIS case - Bundy is just demonstrating how violent some people can get when we try to pry them off the government teat.

Why do normal people put up with this? If this is the level of intelligence of America's right wing, then Progressives should be ashamed of ourselves for not being able to accomplish anything. Look at these people. They defend a racist criminal with human shields, for Christ's sake. And in their minds, they're literally doing it for Christ's sake, because they all claim to be Christian and are standing up for "God and country" (even though Jesus preached non-violence and they were bearing arms against government agents enforcing a court order against a criminal).

We shouldn't be trying to reason with these people, we shouldn't be trying to work across the "isle", we shouldn't even be trying to educate these people because they refuse any information, regardless of the source, if it conflicts with their basic emotional reactions.

But we can't put them in boxcars and send them off to a FEMA camp, either.

So what do we do with these people? Just scream them down with truth, logic and derision.
