Native Americans wince at the stars and stripes. I suppose particularly because of the red stripes, which stand for blood shed for that flag. Much of it was from the local tribes who refused to submit, have their women raped, their men and children slaughtered like livestock, their lands stolen & to be enslaved and put in corrals we call today "reservations". Pound for pound I'd say that the Native Americans were treated far worse than blacks. Because at least blacks were valued on plantations as a vital part of the agriculture production. "Injuns" were shot like skeet and mowed down like grass for any or no offense big or small.

The presence of this flag at each and every government institution or office is an instant and scathing reminder to Native Peoples of the oppression they still live with today. But they don't have significant numbers to vote. The smallpox blankets took care of that. So, yeah, won't probably be much of a movement on the left (or the right) to take down the stars and stripes.

Food for thought.. And before you ask, yes, I have Native American blood. Sioux. A little bit anyway.

If you want my opinion, here it is: No flag should fly on public land except government flags. Not con flags, not gay pride flags, not mexican flags. IMO it is unconstitutional to endorse one group over other groups. If you want to fly the con flag then fly any and all flags. All or nothing.

My idea for an American flag would be more like a Phoenix reborn holding in its talons an upside down star (like the American Medals of Honor), or holding some other epic symbol.

The color sheme? Perhaps red/black/ violet/ blue.

But this idea would be more relevant after the inevitable culling of the masses. A mass cleansing. An American apocalypse. From destruction... creation. Then, the Phoenix would be a powerful symbol of America rising from its ashes and becoming far stronger than it once was.

That is hard to believe. Obviously you have never been to a Pow Wow. The American Flag is promeninently and proudly displayed, and the ceremonies start with a parade of veterans. To which any veteran, regardless of race, is invited to participate.

That was my point of this thread Old Rocks. To point out that First Nation's folks have gotten beyond the old hurts associated with the stars and stripes, have gone to battle and payed homage to it as dual citizens etc. etc. etc. Just like in the South, blacks have understood the confederate flag in recent years to be sort of a binding glue to their previous divides, and as their collective identity, blacks, whites, hispanics and everyone else that lives in the South. There are a few idiots who think of it as "white power" and some blacks, older ones probably, who still feel its sting. But the contemporary meaning of it, if allowed to evolve outside its being conveniently-used to stir up racial unrest by certain people wanting to tag their civil rights cause onto that unrest/sympathy wave, is "the binding glue of southern identity".

And you obviously missed the point. The Confederate Battle Flag represents those that fought a war to maintain black people in slavery. Had someone taken a half hour on a high-lift to move that flag to half mast position, none of this would have come about. However, left flying at full mast when the flag of this nation and the state were at half mast was to say that the lives of nine good American citizens did not matter because they were black. That was offensive to all citizens in this nation.
