It certainly won't be the first time a country we arm today, becomes the target of our next military escapade.

But will it? Europe knows Putin has designs on conquering more countries to realize his dream of another Soviet Union. Why would they stop supplying Ukraine knowing that they would probably need to face off against Russia in the future? Why not provide a few weapons now to weaken Russia to the point their military is virtually useless, which is precisely what has happened.

As for Zelensky aligning with putin, I can’t think of a scenario more ludicrous, but have fun with your fantasies.

For the same reason why Georgia didn't start the military operation against Abkhazia and S. Osetia, or didn't even decreased their trade with Russia. They can see what is the situation in Ukraine, they see what is the situation in the Russian-occupied lands.
So, their main question is not "Should we invite the Americans to defend us?" The answer to that question is already settled. It's "Definitely, no". The only question rised is, "What arrangements can we make ahead of time in order to prevent an American defense?" and that is why they are already trying to degrade the US influence there.
