America's most gerrymandered congressional districts

First off, the dems SUED to have those districts drawn. They had to split up counties just to get those districts drawn.
The dems did not like the fact that NC law prohibited counties from being split up.
The other claim by the dems who by the way prevailed in their suit, was that democrats voters were being....wait for it......packed into certain districts.....Funny thing was that democrats were the ones drawing the districts.
Finally, there is no one who can control where people live. Rural districts, and NC just happens to be a generally rural state, is where conservative voters reside.
Both sides will draw districts to give themselves a political advantage.
I find it ironic you lefties are bitching. However, I see the narrative developing here. You're all pissed off because your side lost the US House and you want it back....By any means necessary.
The hypocrisy arrives when you claim all is right with the world when the dems control Congress...

The Democrats did not draw the map for the 2012 election...the GOP state legislature majority in 2010 did. If what you were saying about Rural districts and NC being a rural state is true....the Democrats wouldn't have won a majority of House districts in NC in 2006 and 2008.

Once again for the slow and stupid only 3 districts are accused of being Gerrymandered and 2 of those were created by democrats at the behest of the Federal Government.

It it impossible that only three districts are Gerrymandered, the state as a whole is Gerrymandered, otherwise how do you get 69% of the Seats with 48% of the vote?

You only need to win by 1. If somebody wins 98% of the vote, only that one that gave them the win is relevant. Now if you can point to a race where a person won with fewer votes than someone else running against them, then I would be all ears. Otherwise, it is just how the numbers aggregate and is of no relevance.

In Massachusetts, Obama got 61% of the vote in 2012, yet 100% of the Congressional districts are held by Democrats as is 85% of the state legislature.

I noticed Maryland and North Carolina are essentially tied for being the most-gerrymandered state.

Maryland votes 60% Democrat anyway, about the same percentage as Oklahoma does for Republicans. Only in Maryland the Republicans won 1 district, in Oklahoma the Democrats won zero.

In North Carolina the Democrats WON the popular vote for the House...and yet only won four out of 13 districts.

At best..the Maryland Democrats Gerrymandered themselves 1 competitive-leaning GOP seat into 1 safe Dem seat. In North Carolina the Republicans literally Gerrymandered a full 3 seats away from the Democrats.

Up until 2003 the partisan split in Maryland's eight Congressional districts was 4 and 4. Then after the redistricting the Democrats gerrymandered it to be 6 Ds and 2 Rs and then after the 2012 redistricting gerrymandered it even more to be 7 and 1.

The 3 democratic districts in question are almost 100 percent democrat. As opposed to less obvious numbers in the other districts. You can thank the democrats for that fact, they tend only to attract the city poor and beholden not the rural self sufficient types. 3 of the biggest cities in NC are in 2 of the districts in question. And again you can thank the democrats for that, they demanded black majorities.

The democrats won 66% of the House votes. Yes, there probably was a small Gerrymander in Mass...but nowhere near the scale of NC.

If you want to look into gerrymanders of that scale, you can bring up Utah, Nebraska, or the plethora of other red states that had ~30% democratic votes but zero dem seats.

And yet you can neither prove it or show it to even remotely true. Of the three gerrymandered districts 2 were done BY democrats at the urging of the US Government and maintained by the Supreme Court.

Go ahead high light for us these other gerrymandered districts? Prove your claim.

And back in 2003 the DC suburbs were nowhere near as large as they are now and Virginia wasn't even a swing state because of them.

Yes Maryland has horrible maps too, just saying "the other side does it too!" is a very weak argument. I still say the GOP is by far the worse offender however.

And yet you can not provide any evidence of it, you can not provide maps or statistics to support your claims about North Carolina and in fact 2 of the 3 gerrymandered districts were done by Democrats and maintained by the US Government against the express wishes of the State in question.

The Majority Minority districts that were mandated in the 90's are not identical to the ones in 2012. It's blatantly obvious what the GOP achieved in NC in 2010 to anyone with half a clue. They altered the Democratic districts to make them much much more packed in with democratic votes, they spread out the GOP votes over more districts. It's simple as pie, not a hard concept to understand how or why. The only thing crazy is how easy it is to get away with.

And yet you can not prove it with any evidence. You are aware of course that before 2010 the Republicans did not control the NC legislature? How exactly did they accomplish that without first gerrymandering the local districts? And how did they have so many republican Federal districts before 2010? And why is that we are almost surely going to have 2 Republican Senators again?

Holy crap, this thread has bounced around with 2,000 different excuses to the issue.

It's like throwing rotten pasta up against the wall and hoping something sticks. It's pathetic. Just admit that the GOP Gerrymandered to victory in NC and nationally and get over it. You all look petty.

You are trying to claim something with no actual evidence to back the claim. I have asked repeatedly you provide any evidence. In fact the specific piece talks about 3 gerrymandered districts and I have shown absolute proof that 2 of them were created by democrats and maintained by the federal Government AGAINST the wishes of the State in question.

Perhaps you can explain how BEFORE the census which did not occur until the end of 2010, the republicans trashed the democrats in the House and cut their lead in the Senate? That was done with the districts established after 2000, you know the districts that allowed the dems to win in 2006 and 2008.

Unless you plan to provide evidence of your ignorant claims you are done here.

Only because they controlled the majority of state legislatures following the 2010 Census. Had it been Democrats that controlled more we'd see the exactly the opposite.

Political parties need to be taken out of the redistricting process.

I never disagreed with you, actually. I'm just pointing out it's very much a bipartisan problem.

Where is the "absolute proof" that democrats created the 2 districts in 2010? The majority minority mandates go back to the voting rights act of 1965...the districts can be redrawn however the state likes as long as a certain percentage of the population is African American. The GOP packed the 3 districts up with Democrats and spread out the GOP voters throughout the rest of the 9 districts, winning by ~10% in all other districts. It ain't that hard to figure out what they did.

2010 was a GOP wave, just like 2008 was a Democrat wave. It was largely a result of the recession.
