Another shitty chain restaurant seeks free advertising by being douchebags

Free healthcare should be a natural mandate for any wealthy country anyways. Who the fuck should be allowed to capitalize on the bad health of their fellow citizens?

The person who spends 12 years and hundreds of thousands of dollars learning a craft. It's called return on investment. Teachers, on average, spend 1/3 of the time and 1/5 of the tuition dollars and Libs seem to want them paid as much as doctors?

They shouldn't be doctors to make money, they should be doctors because they actually fucking care about people.

11 years of education.11 years paying to cost of an education. 11 years of sacrifice. 11 years of no real income. 11 years and over $100,000 in debt. Then you open a business, with a staff that gets paid well, because nurses aren't cheap, liability insurance isn't cheap. Buy, renting, leasing a building is not cheap. Doctors get no discount from utilities, in fact, as a business, they pay more. After opening it will be at least 90 days before they see any money from insurance companies. They are also on call and need to supply an after hours communication system. Since I'm not in that type of business, I'm sure I am missing expenses.

So what you say is really stupid, considering the risk and the cost they incur long before they ever make a dime. Most doctors care about people, yet, from their education, to their start up costs, to their help, to their utilities...are they supposed to be the only ones that are supposed to care about the people?

John Metz, Denny's Franchisee And Hurricane Grill & Wings Owner, Imposes Surcharge For Obamacare

"If I leave the prices the same, but say on the menu that there is a 5 percent surcharge for Obamacare, customers have two choices. They can either pay it and tip 15 or 20 percent, or if they really feel so inclined, they can reduce the amount of tip they give to the server, who is the primary beneficiary of Obamacare," Metz told The Huffington Post. "Although it may sound terrible that I'm doing this, it's the only alternative. I've got to pass the cost on to the consumer."

Metz is the franchisor of Hurricane Grill & Wings, which has 48 locations, five of which are corporate owned, and president and owner of RREMC Restaurants, which runs approximately 40 Denny's and several Dairy Queen locations. He planned to use the 5 percent surcharge tactic in all his restaurants starting in January 2014, when Obamacare is fully implemented.

It amazes me how relatively intelligent people can be so stupid. This man has obviously done a lot of things right to grow his business, but now he comes out and says this? Does he really think this will increase his business? I can certainly see a lot of people boycotting his restaurants over this. I know I would.

It seems he could have gone a different route with this, and made it work in his favor. He could have said that due to the Healthcare Legislation, prices may need to be increased a bit, but he is happy that his full-time employees will all have health insurance. But here is the dumbest thing. These type of companies already limit how many full-time employees they have, because they only offer insurance to management or employees they consider crucial to the business. If company policy states that to be eligible for full benefits, you must work 32 hours or more, then his company is already covering everyone that it ever will. His costs won't change because he doesn't have to cover part-time employees. Since you cannot cover only some full-time employees and not others, the legislation won't change anything for him. He's blowing smoke over nothing.

I think that when push comes to shove, he will not impose any surcharge in 2014. He realizes the bad press he is receiving and how it will hurt his business. But in his butthurt over Obama being elected he just had to grandstand and get his name in the paper

Politics and Religion don't mix with business. It may help with some I hate Obama people but that will peter out quickly. Customers do not like chickenshit added to their bills

Where he will be hurt more is with his employees. He has made it clear what he thinks of them. You can always say "if you don't like it....work somewhere else". In the end most employees will grit their teeth and stay. But your best employees will leave. Good waitresses and good cooks can find work anywhere. Try running your business with second rate waitresses and an inefficient kitchen staff

Well....they can shove their breakfasts up their asses....Grand Slam style.

I usually eat locally when we go out anyway. We have a dozen Mom and Pops that serve better food thank Denny's ever will. Same with upper echelon restaurants.....Won't see me at Applebee's or Olive Garden anymore either.

Beer? we have one of the top ten brew pubs in the country about 25 minutes away....the only problem is that it's 25 minutes back home too. Coffee shops? same thing.

I'm so sick of corporate assholes running this country. They can't afford to absorb $.05/plate....or $.14/ pizza? Such bullshit, such ridiculous greed.

And you're right about the free advertising. They're thinking they are going to become the next Chick-fil-a and all these teabaggers are going to flood their restaurants and then not tip the people busting their asses to support their families.....the sad thing is.....they are probably right.

it wont just be big box restaurants doing this... its going to be the mom and pops too.

:clap2:

Nope, people are already moving towards more support for local mom and pops. All the business BIG business loses by being the douche bags they are is already being redirected to the true backbone of our economy, BY the true backbone of our economy: the people who work, and the small businesses owners WHO invest in the communities they operate within, rather than those THAT merely strip mine them.

No they aren't, they close up everyday. Most people by on price and mom and pop can't compete, now throw more burden of taxes, more costs to start up, competing with less revenue for advertising and so on. They are dying. I have watched it for years and I support local businesses and it is tougher to find them.

Again consumers are moving to cheaper, why pay more? It is sad, but true.

Those greedy business owners should pay the full cost of employee "healthcare"........

And have at least a 25 $ minimum living wage............and union participation with collective bargaining rights.........

For the common good, and "prosperity"............

When push comes to shove, he will raise his prices if, he needs to, to stay in business.

Employees, in this economy are easy to find. Millions of good workers are out of work. Finding a good job today is very tough.

Prices of supplies have gone up. Utilities have gone up. Taxes have gone up. Insurance rates have gone up. Wages have increased since then.

Taxes are going to increase in January and then the biggest tax increase in history will happen with Obamacare kicking in. It will cost trillions and yet the same number of people will still be uninsured. It wasn't really about that, it's just a way of growing government and transferring a lot more power from the people to government. It's something an evil dictator would do.

Some posters have clearly never run a business. It's sad to see people get bashed simply because they've done well. I realize communists think everyone should work for free and everyone should have the same no matter how much work each person does. To each according to need, from each according to ability. Anything else just offends communists.

If you don't like the restaurant, don't eat there. But don't waste your time being all angry just because some people are doing well. That is at the root of it. Some hate people who live in nice homes and drive nice cars. Somehow, the radicals don't think anyone, save for Obama and his ilk, deserve to live the good life.

Usually, jobs waiting on tables are meant for younger people just starting into the job market or those who just want extra income. Management people get health plans. I think the real problem is a person expecting to wait tables and pay for raising a family on their wages. They should have moved up by the time they have a family.

I would not bother attempting to explain this to the libs. They stand stiffly with their arms folded across their chests posturing., They insist the PRICE of the pizza was raised simply to increase profits.
Is it any wonder with liberals in charge of the Beltway that this country is in an economic mess?

The butthurt is strong in this thread.

Where was all this outrage when ows was rapping, soiling and destroying public businesses, private property and people?

He has a right to let his customers know why he raised prices.

He also has the right to not hold his employees hostage to his political agenda.

I think that's a responsibility. Its one thing to raise prices, its another thing to tell your customers that the price hike is going to help those he made sure it would not help in order to :
a) reduce the amount of what little they already make
b) invite this abuse by publicizing this so that like minds will stop by to increase the pressure on the servers to:
c) "[...] speak to their elected officials, to try to convey what this means in terms of their jobs and their livelihoods,"

By all means yes. The workers SHOULD petition the government to air their concerns about how the ACA is going to cost them in lower wages and lost jobs.
For once you get it right.
BTW, do you anyone who works for a Denny's? If not, then what is your basis for stating they make "so little"..
If that were the case, then DEnny's and all the other chain stores would be screaming for workers. I see the opposite. And every Friday and Saturday evening and for those chains that serve breakfast...These places are NOT starving for business.
If the workers were so lowly paid, the service would retreat to a level deemed intolerable and people would stay away from these places.
SO where is your evidence of doom?

He obviously made his point. This is just the beginning. The 5% surcharge is nothing.
The real issue is the limiting of hours. THAT is going to be the norm.

The difference between Dennys and hundreds of other companies is that Dennys told the workers why this was happening. Other companies would just take action and not say anything about it.

With any luck, Dennys will go out of business as another victim of leech greed, just like Hostess.

You will never "get it" because you have your head stuck in the sand. Nobody hates rich people, and nobody wants to see them become poor. What is upsetting is seeing wealthy employers continue to increase their wealth while they pay their employees minimum wage and offer no healthcare or any other benefits. If someone works full-time, even if it is split between two jobs, they sure as hell ought to be able to have health insurance.

The bottom line is that in the long run, this thinking is going to kill even the rich, because as wages continue to decrease for the vast majority, they will not be able to afford the goods and services provided by their own employers. When that happens, it all comes crashing down and the wealthy will lose their wealth also. I really don't know when it happened, but the a good percentage of the wealthy became really stupid. It's obviously about greed, but it will cost them in the end.

We always hear conservatives talk about increasing the size of the pie, so everyone's income grows, which btw is a great concept. The problem is that over the last decade or so, the exact opposite is happening. The wealthy are taking a bigger percentage of the pie, and the pie is not growing, so everyone else is getting the shaft.

No one is stopping these people from obtaining health insurance. There is no federal or state mandate that an employer MUST provide health insurance coverage. This is what is known as a "fringe benefit". An incentive to attract better employees.
Well the model has changed. The cost of offering the coverage has gone out of control.
Oh, you are the second person on here to offer up the theory that two part time jobs equals one full time job. Therefore the employer(s) in your view must offer health insurance coverage. Tell me, which one gets to do that?

Furthermore, I understand the price of Wavy Lays is going up because of Obamacare!

Yes, Dennys treated black customers the same way they treated white customers and black customers complained.

Yeah, every Denny's is RACIST too!!! Are they anti-gay as well? I'm sure they treat their women customers like shit too!!! And Mexicans, they HATE the mexicans!!! I'm sure they recognize the minute a poor person walks thru their doors too, and refuse to serve them!!! The outrage!!!

A lot of what is wrong with this country is that employees are no longer valued assets to many corporations.

Ahh...they are. It's just that government and quite frankly the consumer market plus global competition has changed the marketplace such that employment or "labor" is viewed simply as another expense.
Labor IS a commodity for sure. Always has been.
Labor costs are figuring prominently in the decisions business owners must make in order to keep their investment alive.
One must remember. The primary reason a business exists is to turn a profit for the owners/investors.
The reason employment exists is due to growth of a business, the owner can no longer do all of the work himself.
