However, It is not right to claim as fact that he hates America. He hated the war. We know that. Many did. He hated the mission. Many did. So far, nothing that says he hates America. Being ashamed of America does not mean you hate it. It means you are ashamed that the country you love is doing WHAT YOU PERCEIVE as the wrong thing.

Then you add in his "friendship" with his captors. Shooting range, soccer, etc. Sure it raises an eyebrow when you look at the things he said and did before....but heck, they kept him in a cage like an animal for a week. He had good reason to fear for his life. What would I do? Make those guys like me the best I can.

And I think that is a likely possibility.

here's the thing - if he did as people claim, if he said he was going to leave, if he sent his stuff home, if he had previously walked off base...

yes, some of the blame for his disappearance does lay at the feet of those in his chain of command. his team leader, platoon sergeant, platoon leader, first sergeant, and company commander bear some of that responsibility.

further, clearly security wasn't up to snuff if he was able to walk off base multiple times. so the security of the base bears some responsibility.

Let's see, how many different excuses have they used to justify this travesty:

His health was failing.....turns out this was a lie. Doctors in Germany say he's in fine health.

He life was in danger......well we can't really prove this is a lie other than the fact he was still alive after 5 years living with them.

Doesn't matter that he was playing soccer with them and allowed to carry a weapon after he had earned their trust.

I think he was actually crying because he didn't want to go home. He still won't talk to his parents.
