Can Anyone Tell Me Why It Is So Essential To Increase Defense Spending Over The Near Term?

The Pentagon/DoD is every bit as corrupt and profligately wasteful as any other bloated gubmint program.

Cut out the waste, duplication, contractor payola, weapons systems that don't work and nobody asked for, and plain old theft from the Pentagon budget, you could give all the enlisted a 20% raise AND cut the total budget by 20%.
maybe,
why do the enlisted need a raise?
cut the budget by 20%? as it is, the budget is not large enough today, people dont realize that our submarines are decades old and we dont have nearly enough.

The military budget has been cut for years. It would be better to cut the rest of the Federal Budget, like the trillion in subsidies hidden in the "Infaltion Reduction Act"

Don't have enough for what?...Both Russia and China could hack the power grid today and throw the nation into total chaos without firing a single shot....China released a bioweapon onto the entire world, and didn't fire a shot.

You're fighting the last war, dude...Kinetic warfare has become an anachronism.

The fuck it has....Every year, the budget is bigger than last year...That's not cutting jack schitt.

Those are two different but equally dangerous threats

Hacking the grid is a possibility.

And we should be working at breakneck speed to prevent it

But an old-style projection of conventional military power can only be stopped with conventional military power of our own

the budget has not kept up with inflation

If russia and china can hack the power grid, somebody certainly fucked that up and it now needs to be fixed

Either way, we will always need a Navy and the USMC as well as the Air Force.

Are we building enough submarines and ships? We definitely need more submarines

It's still be biggest budget on the planet.....Bigger than that of the entire budget of other 1st world nations.

You want more submarines, then cut something else...The Pentagon/DoD budget is a corrupt shit show, and needs a major haircut.

the entire government needs a major haircut, that I do not disagree with

and, we are the only 1st world nation, so that point is not relevant, of course you could compare us to all of Europe but there is not one single country to compare us to.

If there was EVER a time to re-examine how addicted we are to spending enormous sums of money on things that go boom, surely it would be now.

Our historical foe is crippling itself, burning through its vast arsenal at an accelerating rate.

They will have to rebuild their military asset base, while under international sanctions. This will be enormously expensive, and will take a decade.

lol, it's never about the historical foe; it's about the foe we've not fought yet but intend to

No.....He couldn't cross 50 miles of English Channel...The notion that he could've taken over the whole world is ludicrous.
The only thing that stopped him was the world having a war against him, which means countries needed militaries. Until that point, he had been doing pretty damn good.

Everybody gets a haircut....No more free lunch.

How about delivery systems?

No CVs, the V2 didn't have the range, the intercontinental bomber was only a dream on a drawing board.

Hitler would never have been able to attack the U.S. mainland.....EVER.

We have depleted our stockpile of military arms and ammunition which has placed our national security at risk

Thank Republicans, one of their conditions was no cuts to the military budgets in order to raise debt ceiling. Would seem the best way to get out of debt is to make cuts to the MIC, at least over priced weapons systems. The amount of graft must be shocking.

And thank democrats who join them in not cutting military profligacy.

Check that plank in your own eye, Corky.

My guess would be to keep up with rising operating costs and inflation. Maybe the military complex is still growing and additional funds are needed to keep up with added personnel and technology advancements?

And how..

More on that later...

When you take over the entire world it's not long before you make it the entire world. Thank God that Japan bombed Pear Harbor or Hitler would have taken over the world while we just sat by and watched.
