It's high time we rethink mental hospitals/institutions. Drugs certainly have a place but at some level we can all agree on--violent behavior, we need institutions.

For example, a patient is being treated for a mental disorder that causes him/her to act violently. Instead of trusting the patient to take his/her meds, have them come to a clinic for their doses. If they fail to show up and can't be reached, the police could be notified that there is a possible risk to public safety in the person of John/Jane Doe residing at 1313 Mockingbird Lane. I would hope that after a thorough debate and council with physicians, we can tweak the doctor/patient confidentiality in a way that insures public safety.

I'd love to hear the opinion of anyone here in the medical or mental health field.

Sounds good to me, but the real culprits were the civil rights lawyers who greatly reduced involuntary commitment.
