In the 50s Red Scare Era, anyone with half a brain even if they were not the rich elite was pushed into science to keep up with the USSR who had beaten us into space. We were taught critical thinking and problem solving. Unfortunately for corporate America, a working brain led to questioning authority and the Hippie Revolution of the 60s. The government saw the error of their ways and stopped making a good education available to everyone no matter what their income and made it only available to the wealthy as it had been before the 1950s experiment.Sorry but that is total nonsense. Corporate america is in desperate need of intelligent young educated people.

Hey, ever...you've given us something important to think about. Thanks!Hmmm I suppose I have a different take on the "dumbing down" of America. Almost everyone is "stupid" from my perspective (MENSA), however, my years of interacting with people has taught me that nearly everyone is brilliant about "something," even if it's pop culture movie trivia or something equally useless. Here's the thing though, my perspective of what is "worthwhile" to be smart about is merely my personal opinion. Clearly to the person who has all that "useless" knowledge the subject was important to /them/. So while it does often appear that American's are getting stupider, the reality is that they simply don't know the stuff we personally think they should know, thus its actually not true.
The priorities of what folks are learning have shifted though, kids are not really gaining intelligence in money or running businesses anymore - I theorize that is due to the backlash of dislike for wealthy folks. The lack of business intelligence I actully kind of blame on the take over of box stores; kids don't see the owner at the mom & pops anymore so there's no real inspiration to lead them into a desire to learn about that stuff.
