It's clear that while the Dow is at it's highest position ever and employment at it's lowest in almost 8 years, there is still economic insecurity abound.

Let's not talk about who is to blame for Economic insecurity and just assume it exists. (Doubt that's going to happen (my prediction is 5 posts in will be "Blame Obama"))

The question being asked is: Does Economic Insecurity lead to Racism?

Jobs are resources in our modern world. We need jobs to sustain ourselves. When we feel that our jobs are being threaten by external forces, we get scared. When we as humans get scared, we try to find the source of our insecurity and "stomp it out". Whether it's affirmative action, immigration, or any other subjects, we see analysis as "them vs. us". It seems like the more afraid people get, the more defensive they get. These people deem the others not like them as "undesirables" or "Not civilized" so that people dehumanize these "others" to justify why you are inherently better than them based on factors that do not have anything to do with ability (ie. skin color).

Is that competition for scarce resources lead others to become more racist than they would normally be under better circumstances?

And here we go!!

For reference:

No, racism leads to economic insecurity. People with the money and power keep racism alive to benefit themselves and keep others dependent.
Al, Jesse, NAACP, democrats, obama, etc.

Couldn't that be said for Rush, Hannity, KKK, Republicans and Bush?

As with violence, there isn't any one cause but many contributing factors leading to it. So the question becomes 'is economic insecurity a contributing factor for racism?'

Yes.

Well wasn't that special.

And aggression towards "the others" leads to separating ourselves as a group to people who are like us and ignoring the rest. That may be a survival mechanism learned by our ancestors but has no relevance in today's modern world. There is no difference, no inherent superiority based on race, religion or creed but that we are all human.

Fear is one of those overarching themes you see that relate to all of these factors of irrational behavior. Racism stems from fear.

I'm not convinced all the racist rhetoric is sincere. I think a lot of it is simply a tool being used by some to further their primary interests like politics. Government only stays in power as long as those being governed believe the government can do things they cannot. Governments always use fear of the others as a tool to stay in power. Nazis did with immigrants, Jews, intellectuals, etc. just as those ino ur government use those same groups in the same way. The death camps didn't appear on day 1 either but only after years of conditioning and rhetoric. While we benefit from having a Holocaust to remember making another less likely, it's not impossible.

wow, that was some of that liberal BS that was posted last week

Economic insecurity...who's fault is that a person is in that position? THEIR OWN. There is a saying that the older generation grew up with and it's: where there is will there is a way

and 93 million people out of work and they call unemployment at it lowest in 8 months

you are a tool

The KKK but not the others you mention. Calling out blacks on their racism is not racist. It's just promoted as such by the people who are being called out in the first place and their handlers in the media.

People are ALWAYS going to have prejudices and some will be full fledged racist

when you have a country filled with so many different races there will always be racism in some form be they Asians, whites, blacks, etc.

so give us a break. Economic insecurity. good grief

So racism and prejudice should just go on? And yes the oppression of former generation reflect our current policies of today. History is never history, it is always with us.

I'm not surprised that you still think there are 93 million people out of work.

This neo-racism is post-great society demagoguery. Nothing to do with past oppression.
