NORFOLK, Va. — Huge vertical rulers are sprouting beside low spots in the streets here, so people can judge if the tidal floods that increasingly inundate their roads are too deep to drive through.

Five hundred miles down the Atlantic Coast, the only road to Tybee Island, Ga., is disappearing beneath the sea several times a year, cutting the town off from the mainland.

“Once impacts become noticeable, they’re going to be upon you quickly,” said William V. Sweet, a scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Silver Spring, Md., who is among the leaders in research on coastal inundation. “It’s not a hundred years off — it’s now.”

“I’m a Republican, but I also realize, by any objective analysis, the sea level is rising,” said Jason Buelterman, the mayor of tiny Tybee Island, one of the first Georgia communities to adopt a detailed climate plan.

How do they tell the difference between "global warming flooding" and "non-global warming flooding"?

Those waves beat on the coast constantly. its called erosion. Of course the coast sluffs away.

Add to that all the rivers and streams being dammed up and the sediment load the used to replenish the beaches is interrupted thus allowing the beaches and sand bars to be eroded away as there is no new sand being deposited. It's an old problem, and one that has been known about for decades. The AGW conmen rely on the collective ignorance of the people to lie to them.

There were no humans to see them. If you want to look at the past to see what climatic conditions humans have survived, there is no point in looking back further than 200,000 years, the data of the appearance of homo sapiens. When it was contended that the cold Arctic fronts coming down the midwest and east coast of the US were being caused by global warming, there was scorn. Yet there were record high temperatures in the Pacific northwest, western Canada, Alaska and the Arctic - that deniers just did not want to talk about. If you had continued around the globe you would have found alternating regions of Arctic cold air descending to the lower latitudes and hot, moist air moving further north than ever seen before. The net effect of the two was no change in global temperatures, up or down, but both effects resulted from the same phenomenon: Rossby Waves in the Polar Vortex. What was causing Rossby Waves? Global warming.

I guess when you haven't actually got a valid argument for a debate about a system as complex as the Earth's climate, an overly-simplistic, black and white approach can really ease your struggle.

Hey Matthew --- this is the nearest tidal gauge to Tybee Island. You've been punked if you people tell you about the obvious GW signature in this recent flooding. It is not obvious from the data.

BTW --- the one at Key West looks pretty much the same. The trend line has NOT CHANGED since BEFORE there was enough CO2 in the Atmos to matter.
It's just what it is. Don't panic like a weenie about it until you show me a tidal gauge that LOOKS like there's a GW signal in it..

Seas have been mostly rising since the glaciers melted back... No real evidence of DRASTIC rate changes. And YES some islands need to think about it.
But using this to panic folks is sick and unethical.

Actually -- about 1/2 the measured sea level rise lately is just thermal expansion. Not melting ice..

The rate is about 1" per decade. . Has been for 80 years. DEAL WITH IT....
