Gotta Read to Believe

There have been incidents where a parent murdered his kid's minor hockey coach in New England a few years back. I have also talked with volunteeer children's hockey coaches and referees who have told me that sometimes they fear for their lives leaving a game - and they weren't joking when they said it. They have told me they're surprised there isn't more violence given the number of over-invested parents.

It is easy to blame this on Latino culture, or soccer, but the bald truth is that violence in sports happens, and not just soccer. It happens in the US and Canada too, so we shouldn't be all smug and complacent that such a thing won't happen here.

While the violence of this assault was really over the top, dead is dead. Whether at the hands of a single parent going out of control, or a group of fans avenging the murder of their friend, the result is the same.
