The military is not going to miss their paychecks. Social Security is not going to stop. Medicare payments will not cease.

These are the same threats that get trotted out every time this happens. The "shutdown" constitutes roughly 13% of federal government services deemed non-essential. While some federal employees are obviously affected, they always end up getting backpay after the fact (which makes the whole shutdown more absurd). Nobody else in the country even notices a change. The only people it's a big deal to are the politicians and the media who thrive on the drama.

The way to solve the problem is actually very simple. Stop spending so much money. Like on subsidies to the UAW to build EVs or welfare for the frigging Illegals or maybe even giving money to India to build electric trains.

Imo, there are two possible answers. 1) Prior to Trump, some in the gop wanted to raise a protest to deficits ... of course, deficts were not a huge issue until Norquist took over Reaganomics. But, Cheney did say, "deficits don't matter, Reagan taught us that." The dems, meanwhile, would probably be all for "taxing the rich" until they figured out that we can't get enough money from that well.

2) The current gop spat amongst themselves seems to have more to do with "culture wars." Apparently, they don't notice that the DoD has been pro-affirmative action in seeking out qualified minorites since .... Vietnam ended. Apparantly this is a shock to people like "coach." (who went undefeated one year at Auburn and still didn't win the Natl Championship, so possibly I should not consider the gop equal to the dems in idiots snatching defeat from the jaws of victory)

That is, following the Trump tax cut to balance the budget failure, they may have just given up on fiscal matters.
