Summary On October 12, 2000, the U.S. Navy destroyer Cole was attacked by a small boat laden with explosives during a brief refueling stop in the harbor of Aden, Yemen. The suicide terrorist attack killed 17 members of the ship’s crew, wounded 39 others, and seriously damaged the ship. Evidence developed to date suggests that it may have been carried out by Islamic militants with possible connections to the terrorist network led by Usama bin Ladin.

The FBI, Defense Department, and Navy launched investigations to determine culpability for the attack and to review procedures. A broad DoD review of accountability was conducted by a special panel. On January 9, 2001, the panel issued its report which avoided assigning blame but found significant shortcomings in security against terrorist attacks, including inadequate training and intelligence. On January 23, 2001, Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman, John Warner, announced intentions for the Committee to hold its own investigation. Issues for Congress include the adequacy of (1) procedures by U.S. forces to protect against terrorist attacks; (2) intelligence related to potential terrorist attacks; and (3) U.S. anti-terrorism policy and response. This report will be updated if major new developments warrant.

The FBI, in conjunction with Yemeni law-enforcement officials, is leading an investigation to determine who is responsible for the attack. At least six suspects are in custody in Yemen. Evidence developed to date suggests that it may have been carried out by Islamic militants with possible connections to the terrorist network led by Usama bin Ladin.4 In addition to the FBI-led investigation, Secretary of Defense William Cohen has formed a special panel headed by retired General William W. Update:

There was also an attack in Montrouge yesterday, according to Al Jazeera.

In that attack, a female police officer who responded to the attack was killed. The suspect fled on foot.

The same suspect who was being searched for in that attack has just attacked a kosher deli in Mammartin-En-Goele and has taken at least one hostage. Al Jazeera is reporting that it is the same person and he has been shouting Allahu Akbar a number of times over. No audio of that yet, but I am typing as Al Jazeera is reporting.

The deli is next to an elementary school, which is now being evacuated. Lots of police busses have just arrived at Mammartin-En-Goele in order to get the kids out.

Al Jazeera is reporting that it thinks that all of these attacks are related to each other: Paris, Montrouge and Mammartin-En-Goule.

So, not just one terror attack in France: 3

SWAT teams are moving in on the scene where the kosher deli was attacked and a hostage is being taken.

Dammartin-En-Goele, where the two hebdo murderers are holed up, is now on lock-down.

The French police now confirm 100% that there is a connection between the Koachi brothers and the other shooter, the one who killed the female police officer in Montrouge and severely wounded another and who then shot up a kosher deli and is holding a hostage. This is happening in Porte de Vincennes.

The perps know each other.

Dammartin-En-Goele is north of Paris.
Montrouge is south of Paris.
Porte de Vincennes is east of Paris.

The thinking is that the subsequent attacks from yesterday and today are an attempt to draw the police away from the siege of the Koachi brothers.
