I suppose you and me have different experiences. I received lots of e-mail, so much so that I opened the mail in order of who sent it and didn't (ever?) read every line, every word. I needed to know the substance of the e-mail and how I should prioritize a response, if necessary.
I did receive and send CONFIDENTIAL e-mails, but I used a cover letter for such e-mails which clearly stated the document(s) to follow were for the recipients eye only.
