It would seem to me that this has been true forever. In many ways though there is less hate, but we focus on the hate that is left in the world instead of where we actually do get along quite well.

The big difference IMHO is that today, we involve our children in this political discourse to a far greater extent than ever before. And that serves what? Creating sheep out of what should be children that are raised to be independent thinkers. I grew up in a Democrat household, but honestly there were little, if any discussion as to how wrong the other side was. We were left to be kids.
