But we do not govern ourselves. We elect our representatives in Congress. But we don’t make or pass laws or even vote on the. The representatives do that.

On rather rare occasions we do get our say on proposed Amendments to our Constitution. But those are Amendments to our founding charter. They are not laws to be administered.

If you happen to like to smoke some weed once in a while, but your State doesn’t allow it, you don’t govern yourself. Your state legislators have made that decision FOR you.

You can try to change the law. But you likely won’t be voting on the new law. Instead you will maybe be voting for a different representative. And maybe you’ll cobble a network of like minded citizens together to get them to vote for other representatives who support your vision.
