Is freedom of thought and speech obsolete?

"I have sworn upon the alter of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." -Thomas Jefferson Memorial

"I may disagree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it." -Voltaire

Do you agree or disagree with these concepts?

I have the freedom of thought and freedom of speech to believe in the legalization of Drugs and Prostitution

As a half Native American Cherokee I have the freedom to say and think that racism is real and people discriminate against me for being half Cherokee.

I have the freedom of thought and speech to say I see nothing wrong with having sex outside of marriage and many sex partner and open marriages.

Explain cancel culture then. Will or should we apply that to libel and slander?
Cancel culture?

You mean like DeSantis going after Disney?

Or do you mean the New Right going after a beer product?

Or how about Target being...targeted?

No. That's not libel or slander.

No it isn't. It's alive and well right here.

Come on, in all fairness the mods may move things around but I've never known em to edit posts or censor text. Have you?

Generally there's a free exchange of ideas on this forum, yes?
It's obsolete everywhere.

Lol. Seems like I brought out your true feelings on the subject.

Bud Light and Target are boycotts. People aren't cancelling them. They are boycotting them, that therein is an act of free speech.

Disney reaped what they sowed. It was only a matter of time before their special privileges, granted them by state governments long passed, were revoked.

Oh, so you mean removing books from schools because they hurt someone's feewings.

That kind of cancel culture.

Actually, the rhetoric of political campaigns at the beginning of our democracy makes today's backbiting look almost tame.
You are correct. Even in the 30's the "new deal" was often called the "Jew deal". The thing that is different today is that back then--I imagine there were some loons too--but most of the folks who thought that way and said that were true believers. Today? Your party's savior one year is disavowed as not being a "real" member of the party months later.

These are not concepts currently in use in the USA.
Until there is a mass casualty event with Democrats, these concepts are dead.

The ugliest political cycle in our history was probably the election of 1828.

The attacks on Andrew Jackson's wife actually killed her.

If we were talking about canceling the authors of the books then yes, that's cancel culture.
Otherwise, no.

I spent 35 years defending that one.

After seeing the massive criminal, stallinist abuse of power by these Socialist Authoritarian Democrats, lying / spreading propaganda and lies, destroying the country with division, hate, and voicing their treasonous / pedophile agendas, I no longer can bring myself to defend their right to keep doing / saying these things.

They must be defeated, not defended.

“Is freedom of thought and speech obsolete?”

Of course not – it’s very much alive and relevant.

But it is under attack by the authoritarian, neo-fascist right; by conservatives who seek to compel conformity and punish dissent.

We know this to be true the consequence of Republican efforts to ban books and drag shows, with laws that deny transgender Americans their right to free expression, measures that criminalize the teaching of facts and the truth in schools, that violate the First Amendment rights of social media, and that vilify and demonize gay Americans.

American’s of good faith need to fight back against the right’s agenda hostile to freedom of thought and speech, in the courts and at the ballot box.
The conservative agenda has always been to save the country from the destructive madness of the Left. ;)

I have the freedom of thought to support under 18 getting sex changes
I have the freedom of thought to support gay/lesbian/ transgender marriages

I agree with Jefferson, not so much with Voltaire; too much incivility in the way things are said.
/----/ "too much incivility in the way things are said."
You mean someone is uncivil who dares disagree with you.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has acknowledged that Facebook’s “fact-checkers” have censored information that was actually true, leading to a loss of trust.

During an interview on the “Lex Fridman Podcast,” Zuckerberg disclosed that Facebook and Instagram had censored skeptics of the Covid pandemic without substantial evidence to prove the claims false. However, subsequent developments have shown that much of the so-called “misinformation” was either true or subject to debate.

Zuckerberg acknowledged the challenges of identifying misinformation on social media and conceded that the corporate media and Big Tech were mistaken in censoring skeptical viewpoints.

/----/ Yeah, we have the right NOT to buy stuff from people or companies for any reason.
Just like vegans have to NOT buy meat from the supermarket. Just like libs have the right NOT to get lunch from Chick-Fil-a. See how that works?
