The human condition is not happy at 100%. Balancing freedom and comforts seems to be a quandry in different percentages.The dirty little secret is, there is a cost to freedom
For example, when the US fought for their independence, the majority of Americans did not support the endeavor. It was the minority who chose to fought as the rest either supported the King of England or were indifferent. Then when they achieved their independence, they had financial hardship for years.
Most people favor safety and comfort over freedom so as long as everything is tied to "democracy", mob rule will continue to cling to those who wish to limit their freedoms in favor of safety and comfort.
It reminds me of the story of the Hebrew people taken out of slavery in Egypt. When they got into the desert after miraculously being freedom from bondage, the people clamored for the "good life" of slavery in Egypt where they could rely on a meal and shelter being provided for them, as they were whipped to work out in the fields all day.
You may even say, despotism relies on democracy to function.
