The truth is Cuba...under communism...doesn't create enough goods for them to be able to afford to trade with other countries. For decades the Soviet Union propped up their economy by buying things like sugar at higher than market price. Then the Soviets went under and things got steadily worse for the Cuban people. Their government now has a reputation for buying on credit and not paying their bills.

Their government now has a reputation for buying on credit and not paying their bills.

Cuba produces almost twice a much as most Caribbean countries, and has more doctors and health workers earning money around the world than anyone else.
But why do you think we invaded Grenada?
It was because they hired Cubans to help rebuild a bigger airport, for tourism.

Sugar production between 1950 and 1955 averaged 6.3 million tons per annum and exports averaged 5.7 million tons per annum, with a maximum of 8.4 and 7.2 million tons respectively in the year 1990. The figure shows the strong correlation between production and exports as well as the fact that consumption is a low percentage of production. Large production increases were recorded in 1961 and 1970. After 1973, there was a steady increase in production through 1990. After 1990, production collapsed to almost 4 million tons, a level similar to that recorded in the worst production years of the period, 1963 and 1973.
