If the electoral certification was stopped by the insurrection, then the choice would devolve to congress, who would vote by state, and with the majority of states being under republican control, that would mean Trump and Pence elected by the majority of small states.

And if that failed, and no president or vice president chosen by congress, then the vacancy would be filled by the speaker of the house, which the armed gunman planned on killing.

That would mean the presidency would go to the president pro-temp of the senate, which at the time was a republican

They're looking for the single statement that started the insurrection, instead of looking at the straw that broke the camels back.

Trump had been talking "stop the steal" for months, turning first to the courts, which universally rejected his claims. Then he turned to the states, who again could not recount or audit a Trump victory. Finally he turned to overthrowing the results in congress on January 6th, their final stand.

The irony of their stopping the count, is that congress reacted to it by dropping their objections and delays to counting the votes, thereby actually accelerating the counting of electoral votes, and the final count of 306 for Biden and 232 for Trump.
