Justice Scalia Thinks Black Students Belong In 'Slower-Track' Schools

Sadly, this is the imagine Affirmative action has made of blacks. A merit based system where everyone competes equally would erase this.

Just when I think your brain really is the size of a blueberry...you surprise me.

Wow. This is really racist. I think that there are bright blacks and some whites and minorities can be intellectually challenged. This whole conversation should be without comment on race. Take out Affirmative Action and allow the students grades determine if they qualify for advanced institutions.
Big fish little pond theory makes your solution unworkable.

WASHINGTON -- Do black students matter to Justice Antonin Scalia?

During oral arguments on Wednesday in Fisher v. University of Texas, a contentious affirmative action case, the conservative justice seemed to call their abilities into question.

"There are those who contend that it does not benefit African-Americans to get them into the University of Texas, where they do not do well," Scalia said, "as opposed to having them go to a less-advanced school ... a slower-track school where they do well."

Scalia was engaging former U.S. Solicitor General Gregory Garre, who is now representing the University of Texas at Austin as the school defends its ongoing consideration of race as one of many factors in its admissions program.

Pointing to a brief the court received before oral arguments, Scalia noted "most of the black scientists in this country don't come from schools like the University of Texas."

Garre tried to interject, but the justice continued. "They come from lesser schools where they do not feel that ... they're being pushed ahead in classes that are too fast for them," Scalia said.

Hey Einstein. He was talking about the slow students who get admitted via affirmative action. It's obvious you didn't get snapped up by MIT.

LOL

The problem of minorities ending up getting into schools that they cannot keep up in has been known for a long time.

And actually, I've read some interesting reports that this process does not just happen to AA minorities, but to anyone who scrapes into a "good" school in a certain field and then finds they can't keep up.

The discouragement often leads to people giving up, when really they just don't need to be in, for example, MIT.

MIT isn't the only place to study Technology.
Not everyone is cut out to be college students. When I was in high school there was the college prep path and business prep for others. That included more math, typing skills and of course there was Vocational ed.
Everyone qualified for something.

I am unimpressed by MIT. I worked with some dumb people that graduated from that school.

You worked ???

We know that can't be true.
Its true. Before I figured out I had the skills to cut out the middle man and stop making my employer wealthy.

Science Update: Spotlight on African American Scientists - Science NetLinks

His comments made me go look up prominent black scientists just to see where they went to school Seems they went to pretty famous schools.

But you need to look at the big picture. First, we need Scalia to explain his position to Ben Carson. I wish I could be there.

Now, this is the hilarious part. How many times have USMB Republicans said scientists are over educated? That elite schools are too liberal?

Scalia actually could have said right wing Redneckers should stay in tier four Christian colleges like Bob Jones and Jerry Falwell because liberal elite colleges move too fast for such ignorant people.

Now, I know Republicans hate the PEW survey that concluded only 6% of scientists are Republican. Considering how much they poke fun at education and how scared they are of educated immigrants, I don't know why they would think they are any more than 6%.

Editorials & Opinion | Clarence Thomas: Poster Boy For Affirmative Action | Seattle Times Newspaper

In a November 1983 speech to his staff at the federal Equal Employment Opportunities Commission, Thomas called affirmative action "critical to minorities and women in this society."

Then, his remarks got personal: "But for them (affirmative-action laws), God only knows where I would be today. These laws and their proper application are all that stand between the first 17 years of my life and the second 17 years."

As an undergraduate at Holy Cross College, Thomas received a scholarship set aside for racial minorities. He was admitted to Yale Law School in 1971 as part of an aggressive (and successful) affirmative-action program with a clear goal: 10 percent minority enrollment. Yale offered him generous financial aid.

The truth is that Thomas owes thanks to the civil-rights movement - whose decades of lawsuits, protests and lobbying removed barriers for individuals like Thomas. Yet, he seems to relish his role as one of the movement's main enemies.

The bottom line is that Republicans, for sure, have lost the black vote.

In fact, this has helped the entire system.

There is no reason, no excuse to deny any student the education they want. Other countries, with much smaller tax bases, pay for their people to be educated. Why doesn't the US?

Interesting that, back in the day, "wops" were often kept from getting an education.

Anybody for affirmative action in the NBA? Just give the white guys a chance. They can dunk basketballs too if given a chance.
There are plenty of white guys in the NBA. They just dont happen to be american.

Wow...keep lying...look at the stats...

What he is pointing to is that because of a misplaced stupidity about using discrimination to end discrimination....academically advanced schools are taking minority students who can't keep up.....just because they are trying to fill a quota of minorities...so minority students...who went to democrat controlled schools in inner cities, who were not actually educated, get scholarships to go to schools they are not ready for.....just because they are minorities...they then can't keep up...because the democrat school failed them...and then they end up dropping out of college...

If they had gone to a school that matched their academic ability, or allowed them to catch up with remedial classes they would actually graduate..

But hey....you guys don't care...as long as the black or hispanic shows up on election day you don't care if they get an actual education...in fact..if they get an education and a job...they might stop votiing for democrats......

Not really. 400 years of AA for white males has created a situation where the concept of a merit based system would be disproportionately beneficial to whites. Similar to how AA today is more beneficial to white women. Thats like having a merit based system for joining the NBA and expecting american white guys to be equally represented.

Yes......in order to end discrimination based on race........we must discriminate against people based on race.....

Bravo...bravo......

How would you like White Americans Affirmative Action for the NBA. The whites wouldn't be as gifted as the rest of the team, but they should be allowed to play to "even the playing field."

And native Americans have more of a head start than whites. So what? We are living in a society that everyone should prove themselves to be worthy. We are not allowing for work ethics and working your ass off.

No one would like that. Its a private business based on entertainment, its a merit based system that whites actually had a head start in as well, it has nothing to do with formal education.

Who told you NAs had more of a head start than whites? They were discriminated against as well.
