SKS semi-auto was designed and produced by and in Russia during WWII. A Chinese copy, the Model 56 flooded the world market after the war.

They were never really popular here until Bill Clinton's AWB. Then the market jumped in and started importing millions of them into the US because they were complaint with the ban. I remember seeing stacks of them back during the 90's. You could buy those SKS rifles for $50 or even buy them by the crate. 640-round spam cans of Russian 7.62x39 could be bought for $20, too. Now they're going for $150-200 and the good Russian stuff is scarce.
