The New York doctor who has the President's ear on swine flu warned on Tuesday that the threat this fall is real.

And if you even suspect you're sick, he says, "isolate yourself."

"This flu could be extremely dangerous," said Dr. Harold Varmus, co-chairman of the President's Council of Advisers on Science and Technology. "It needs to be taken seriously."

Varmus is co-author of a stunning report delivered Monday to the White House that says 90,000 Americans could die of swine flu in the coming months.

The 68-page report said about half of all Americans will get the H1N1 virus - and 1.8 million will wind up in the hospital, stressing the health care system.

"The infection rate will be pretty high," he told the Daily News. "Everybody is at quite high risk."

"You should be watching for the symptoms," he said "and stay at home if they're mild. Isolate yourself so you don't spread the virus."

But "if people are feeling quite sick, they should not wait to consult their doctor" and instead head to the hospital.

There are still a lot of unknowns, Varmus admits:

08-26) 04:00 PDT Atlanta - -- Federal authorities plan to initiate a nationwide campaign in the coming weeks to persuade Americans to get the swine flu vaccine and to erase any public skepticism about the flu's danger and the safety of immunizations.

Even as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has manufacturers working overtime to produce a vaccine for the swine flu by mid-October, government officials are concerned that demand for immunization will not be high. In particular, parents participating in focus groups this summer expressed concern that ramping up vaccine production would make it less safe than the seasonal flu vaccine.

Only about 1 in 3 Americans gets the seasonal flu shot, but some of the groups with the lowest rates of immunization have the highest risk of becoming infected with the swine flu. Less than 25 percent of children under age 2 get the seasonal flu vaccine, for example, and rates are even lower for school-aged children "Many parents (in focus groups) expressed a lot of concerns about 2009 H1N1 vaccine. Those concerns were centered around the fact that it was new and it was being developed quickly," said Kris Sheedy, a communications director with the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, during a meeting with reporters Tuesday at the CDC.

"There were comments such as 'this is new and I don't want my child to be a guinea pig.' "

She added that people in focus groups mostly viewed the swine flu as a "mild disease," which might make them reluctant to be vaccinated.

Cause of concern

Since it first emerged last spring, the swine flu, a form of influenza Type A, subtype H1N1, has been no more dangerous than seasonal influenza. But most people have no natural immunity to the virus, and federal public health officials worry about the consequences if it is allowed to spread unchecked.

On Monday, federal officials estimated that the swine flu could infect 60 million to 120 million people in the United States this fall and winter, and result in up to 1.8 million people being hospitalized and as many as 90,000 dying.

In their campaign to raise awareness, public health officials on the local and national levels will focus on high-risk populations - including children, pregnant women and adults with underlying health problems. Regional health departments will set up clinics at schools and other public places to distribute the vaccine.

The federal government will spend about $16 million on outreach to convince people of the need to get the swine flu vaccine. (Continued)

PARIS - Northern hemisphere countries have so far ordered more than one billion doses of swine flu vaccine, the World Health Organisation said Tuesday, sparking warnings over shortages.

Some countries — notably Greece, The Netherlands, Canada and Israel — have ordered enough double doses to inoculate their entire populations.

Others, such as Germany, the United States, Britain and France, have put in orders that would cover between 30 and 78 percent of people.

“Pandemic vaccine orders put in by northern hemisphere countries stand at over one billion,” WHO spokeswoman Melinda Henry told AFP.

“In the early days, there will be a very limited supply of vaccine. There won’t be sufficient supply to vaccinate whole populations, or even huge proportions of populations,” Henry said by phone.

Intense demand coupled with production delays could create shortages, forcing governments that are preparing for a second, possibly more deadly, wave of flu to make hard choices about who to vaccinate first, experts have warned.

In July, the WHO said that the 25 drug companies which had announced their intention to manufacture vaccines could crank out up to 94 million doses per week starting in mid-October. (Continued)

The Obama administration is quietly dusting off an effort to impose new federal quarantine regulations, which were vigorously resisted by civil liberties organizations and the airline industry when the rules were first proposed by the Bush administration nearly four years ago.

White House officials aren’t saying what their rules might ultimately require. But the previous administration proposed giving the federal government the authority to order a “provisional quarantine” of three business days — or up to six calendar days — for those suspected of having swine flu or other illnesses listed in a presidential executive order.

The Bush-era proposal would also have required airlines and cruise lines to store more information about domestic and international passengers, such as e-mail addresses, traveling companions and return flight information. The information would be subject to review by federal officials in a health emergency, though it would be voluntary for passengers to provide the data.

Opponents of the Bush administration’s efforts to enforce the new guidelines insist that they still are a mistake. “It’s not really going to help,” said Wendy Mariner, a professor of law and public health at Boston University. “The proposals to limit liberty represent a dangerous precedent to constitutional theory, particularly when there’s almost no evidence it will matter. ... It wouldn’t surprise me if they try to sneak this past in August, when people are away.”(Continued)

The CDC has followed in the footsteps of British health authorities (Fox News Story + WorldNet Daily Story + World News Story) by warning neurologists to look out for cases of the nerve disease Guillain-Barre syndrome caused by the swine flu vaccine.​

Doctors in Britain were advised last month by the government to carefully track cases of the disease and report each one to the Health Protection Agency. A letter sent by 600 neurologists indicated that &#8220;there is concern at the highest levels that the vaccine itself could cause serious complications,&#8221; according to a Daily Mail report.​

During the 1976 swine flu scare in the U.S., which prompted the government to order a mass vaccination program to cover the entire population, the vaccine caused more deaths than the actual virus, prompting a public backlash that cost the then director of the CDC his job.​

Similar concerns about the vaccine are now being replicated over 30 years later.​

&#8220;The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Neurology have asked all neurologists to report new cases of Guillain-Barre in people who get vaccines this fall and winter to the Food & Drug Administration&#8217;s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System,&#8221; reports The Oregonian.

A "pandemic response bill" currently making its way through the Massachusetts state legislature would allow authorities to forcefully quarantine citizens in the event of a health emergency, compel health providers to vaccinate citizens, authorize forceful entry into private dwellings and destruction of citizen property and impose fines on citizens for noncompliance.

If citizens refuse to comply with isolation or quarantine orders in the event of a health emergency, they may be imprisoned for up to 30 days and fined $1,000 per day that the violation continues.

Massachusetts' pandemic response bill

"Pandemic Response Bill" 2028 was passed by the Massachusetts state Senate on April 28 and is now awaiting approval in the House.

As stated in the bill, upon declaration by the governor that an emergency exists that is considered detrimental to public health or upon declaration of a state of emergency, a local public health authority, with approval of the commissioner, may exercise the following authorities (emphasis added):

• to require the owner or occupier of premises to permit entry into and investigation of the premises;

• to close, direct, and compel the evacuation of, or to decontaminate or cause to be decontaminated any building or facility, and to allow the reopening of the building or facility when the danger has ended;

• to decontaminate or cause to be decontaminated, or to destroy any material;

• to restrict or prohibit assemblages of persons;

• to require a health care facility to provide services or the use of its facility, or to transfer the management and supervision of the health care facility to the department or to a local public health authority;

• to control ingress to and egress from any stricken or threatened public area, and the movement of persons and materials within the area;

• to adopt and enforce measures to provide for the safe disposal of infectious waste and human remains, provided that religious, cultural, family, and individual beliefs of the deceased person shall be followed to the extent possible when disposing of human remains, whenever that may be done without endangering the public health;

• to procure, take immediate possession from any source, store, or distribute any anti-toxins, serums, vaccines, immunizing agents, antibiotics, and other pharmaceutical agents or located within the commonwealth as may be necessary to respond to the emergency;

• to require in-state health care providers to assist in the performance of vaccination, treatment, examination, or testing of any individual as a condition of licensure, authorization, or the ability to continue to function as a health care provider in the commonwealth;

• to waive the commonwealth's licensing requirements for health care professionals with a valid license from another state in the United States or whose professional training would otherwise qualify them for an appropriate professional license in the commonwealth;

• to allow for the dispensing of controlled substance by appropriate personnel consistent with federal statutes as necessary for the prevention or treatment of illness;

• to authorize the chief medical examiner to appoint and prescribe the duties of such emergency assistant medical examiners as may be required for the proper performance of the duties of office;

• to collect specimens and perform tests on any animal, living or deceased;

• to exercise authority under sections 95 and 96 of chapter 111;

• to care for any emerging mental health or crisis counseling needs that individuals may exhibit, with the consent of the individuals

State and local agencies responding to the public health emergency would be required to exercise their powers over transportation routes, carriers, public utilities, fuels, food, clothing and shelter, according to the legislation. (Continued)

H1N1 vaccination to be required for US military


Sep 2, 2009 (CIDRAP News) &#8211; Vaccination against the pandemic H1N1 influenza will be required for all uniformed US military personnel, with the immunizations starting in early October, the Department of Defense (DoD) announced yesterday.

In a news release, Army Lt. Col. Wayne Hachey, the department's director of preventive medicine, said vaccination will be mandatory for uniformed personnel and will be available to all military family members who want it.

DoD expects to receive 1 million doses of the vaccine in early October and another 1.7 million doses later in the month, the release said.

First in line for the vaccine will be healthcare workers, deploying troops, those serving on ships and submarines, and new recruits, according to DoD.

"Any place where we take a lot of people, squash them all together and get them nice and close and put them under stressful conditions will get the vaccine," Hachey said.

To distribute the vaccine, he said, the military will use its usual seasonal flu vaccine distribution chain, a system in use for decades.

He noted that a decision is still awaited on whether each person will need one dose or two. "The assumption right now is that people will need two doses, 21 days apart. That may change," he said. Federal officials are awaiting early results of clinical trials for guidance on the number of doses.

DoD already has seasonal flu vaccine and will begin giving the immunizations soon, Hachey said. "That has been our message to immunizers: to try and get as many people as they can immunized against the season flu early."

The civilian immunization program for H1N1 is expected to start in mid October.

He did when he started this thread back in what, April? I think he's given up lately. The Virus and FEMA camps tinfoil hat conspiracies aren't working as he wanted and yes, I believe he wanted it to be true so that he could come back here and gloat like he's the smartest person in the universe.
