Human Tests Begin on H1N1 Vaccine

DECATUR, Ga. -- Human trials of a vaccine against the H1N1 (swine flu) virus begin today at Emory University's Hope Clinic.

Researchers plan to inject roughly 25 volunteers per day over the next five days. They hope to determine not only the vaccine's safety and effectiveness, but also whether one or two doses are required to produce full immunity to the disease.

Emory is among eight research institutions around the country testing H1N1 vaccines. According to the Word Health Organization, a vaccine could become available to the general public as early as September.

The vaccine trials begin on a day many American children return to school. And while experts predict a resurgence of H1N1 cases in the fall, there will likely be fewer school closings than there were during the initial outbreak in the spring.
Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidelines discouraging the practice:

"Based on the experience and knowledge gained in jurisdictions that had large outbreaks in spring 2009, the potential benefits of preemptively dismissing students from school are often outweighed by negative consequences, including students being left home alone, health workers missing shifts when they must stay home with their children, students missing meals and interruption of students’ education."

Instead, the CDC recommends schools focus on routine cleaning, basic hygiene and, in the event of a more serious outbreak, active screening of students and staff for fever and other symptoms of flu. The CDC also recommends children who become sick with H1N1 be allowed to return to class as early as 24 hours after their fever goes away.

According to CDC figures released Aug. 7, H1N1 has been responsible for 6,506 hospitalizations and 436 deaths in the U.S. To put this in perspective, it's estimated more than 1 million Americans may have been infected with the disease -- most of them experiencing symptoms no more severe than seasonal flu (which, according to CDC data, is responsible for approximately 36,000 U.S. deaths each year).

But some health experts are concerned the H1N1 virus could mutate into a more serious form. Which is why the human trials beginning today are so important.

A warning that the new swine flu jab is linked to a deadly nerve disease has been sent by the Government to senior neurologists in a confidential letter.
The letter from the Health Protection Agency, the official body that oversees public health, has been leaked to The Mail on Sunday, leading to demands to know why the information has not been given to the public before the vaccination of millions of people, including children, begins.

It tells the neurologists that they must be alert for an increase in a brain disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), which could be triggered by the vaccine

The increasing militarization of preparations for an outbreak of swine flu is proceeding rapidly and without very much public debate, despite the relatively mild nature of the disease so far and the fact that many experts believe the panic has been overblown.

Earlier this week, Republican Representative Paul Broun of Georgia warned a town hall meeting that a &#8220;socialistic elite&#8221; may be preparing to declare martial law in the United States using a pandemic disease as the pretext. &#8220;They&#8217;re trying to develop an environment where they can take over,&#8221; he told attendees according to an article in the Athens Banner-Herald (story). &#8220;We&#8217;ve seen that historically.&#8221;

In another alarming development this week, National Guard troops are involved in a drill to take over a high school in Maine to deal with potential riots and panic over distribution of treatment for the H1N1 virus, the Maine Sun Journal reported Thursday. &#8220;The National Guardsmen will take on the roles of panicked citizens and military police and practice what they would do, such as using tear gas, in the case of a riot,&#8221; said the newspaper article entitled &#8220;National Guard Drill at High School to Prepare for Possible H1N1 Riot.&#8221; The story also noted that local law enforcement would be involved.

This is all despite the fact that the Maine Center for Disease Control has reported just one death tied to the swine flu, and the man actually died from &#8220;underlying conditions complicated by H1N1,&#8221; according to Dr. Dora Mills, the center&#8217;s director.

&#8220;This is just a component of moving the stuff from point A to B,&#8221; assured the director of Oxford County&#8217;s emergency management agency, Scott Parker. He told the Sun Journal that the plan would only be put in place &#8220;if needed.&#8221;

Apparently concerns about panic and disorder were raised during a conference in April, so the governor and the adjutant General of the Maine National Guard decided to formulate a plan to bring in military police. (Continued)

Chinese Produce One-Shot Swine Vaccine

CHINESE pharmaceutical company producer Sinovac said today it has produced a vaccine for the swine flu virus which works after one dose.

Clinical trials have produced "positive" results, said Sinovac, the latest company to announce progress in making a vaccine against the A(H1N1) virus ahead of an expected second wave as the northern hemisphere winter approaches.

"The analysis of the clinical trial results showed that the A(H1N1) vaccine developed by Sinovac induces good immunogenicity after one dose," it said.

The clinical trials began last month and were completed on August 15 in Beijing, with some 1614 participants aged three and over.

"After receiving one shot of the vaccine, none of the volunteers participating in Sinovac's clinical trials exhibited any signs of severe adverse reactions," it said.

Any adverse reactions were "all mild and transient, with pain at the site of injection as the most common symptom," it said.

Sinovac chief Weidong Yin said the company plans to take the next steps in bringing the vaccine to market "as soon as possible", while fully ensuring "the safety and immunogenicity of the vaccine".

British pharmaceuticals group GlaxoSmithKline said last week that it had begun clinical trials in Germany of a vaccine to combat the swine flu pandemic, with results expected from next month.

Somebody tell us what is wrong with this story?? The Bio-Weapon Virus has yet to mutate! Any vaccine created today can only provide protection against the parent/carrier strain that has mild symptoms and does not represent any danger to a vast majority of the general population. These vaccines have nothing to do with the killer/super strains that will emerge later this fall that these scientists have yet to even see . . .

BEIJING, China (CNN) &#8212; The world will soon see an &#8220;explosion&#8221; of swine flu cases as the H1N1 virus spreads rapidly around the world, a top World Health Organization official said Friday.

Spread of the virus is entering an &#8220;acceleration period&#8221; and it is certain that there will be more cases and more deaths, said Dr. Shin Young-soo, the organization&#8217;s regional director for the Western Pacific.

&#8220;Most countries may see a doubling of cases every three to four days for two months until peak transmission is reached,&#8221; he said at a symposium in Beijing. &#8220;At a certain point, there will seem to be an explosion in case numbers. I believe it is very likely that all countries will see community-level transmission by the end of the year.&#8221;

More than 1,490 people around the world have died from the virus since it emerged this spring, Shin said.

Swine flu is the first influenza pandemic in more than 40 years. So far, it has caused mostly mild illness &#8212; but Shin warned &#8220;the virus has a sting in its tail&#8221; because it is very infectious and &#8220;has the potential to cause more serious disease.&#8221;

Any widespread resistance to antiviral drugs, expected to be available this fall, could make the situation worse, he said.

A warning that the new swine flu jab is linked to a deadly nerve disease has been sent by the Government to senior neurologists in a confidential letter.

The letter from the Health Protection Agency, the official body that oversees public health, has been leaked to The Mail on Sunday, leading to demands to know why the information has not been given to the public before the vaccination of millions of people, including children, begins.

It tells the neurologists that they must be alert for an increase in a brain disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), which could be triggered by the vaccine.

GBS attacks the lining of the nerves, causing paralysis and inability to breathe, and can be fatal.

The letter, sent to about 600 neurologists on July 29, is the first sign that there is concern at the highest levels that the vaccine itself could cause serious complications.
It refers to the use of a similar swine flu vaccine in the United States in 1976 when:

  • More people died from the vaccination than from swine flu.
  • 500 cases of GBS were detected.
  • The vaccine may have increased the risk of contracting GBS by eight times.
  • The vaccine was withdrawn after just ten weeks when the link with GBS became clear.
  • The US Government was forced to pay out millions of dollars to those affected.
Concerns have already been raised that the new vaccine has not been sufficiently tested and that the effects, especially on children, are unknown.

It is being developed by pharmaceutical companies and will be given to about 13million people during the first wave of immunisation, expected to start in October.

Top priority will be given to everyone aged six months to 65 with an underlying health problem, pregnant women and health professionals. (Continued)
