When the slaves were freed, and the big plantations partitioned to give the freed slaves land, the South descended in poverty and it stayed there.

These statues aren't "history". Americans don't teach the history of slavery, and its' effect on the nation. They gloss it over. Pretend it wasn't as bad as it was. History isn't in the statue. Never was.
