Very few people would have trouble with fiscally responsible funding of necessary items like defense, police, courts etc.
Funding roads and other infrastructure on a user basis (i.e fuel tax) is acceptable.
A basic community education on a local basis would be acceptable by most people.
What is unacceptable is taking money from the people that earned it and giving it to the people that didn't earn it like in welfare, subsidies, bailouts and entitlements. That is where government goes amuck.

Socialism is best when it is voluntary. Many folks choose to live in HOA communities, but it shouldn't be forced upon anybody. Likewise with insurance where the resources of many care for the misfortune of a few. Next best is when control is local, as we have with local school boards and city governments. We have Republicans here controlling Arizona's government. Their continual passage of laws imposing state control over local matters really ticks me.
