Pelosi orders removal of portraits of ex-House speakers who served in Confederacy

Why celebrate people who actively were working against democracy? Confederates wanted to overthrow the government and form their own nation.
It isn't a celebration. It is an acknowledgment that they served.

They call that "History". We sometimes learn from it.
I guess your would put up a bust or portrait of Benedict Arnold. He served as well.
Did he serve in Congress?
Not the point. Would you put the best or portrait of Benedict Arnold up at West Point?
It is the point. Benedict Arnold's portrait, if one exists, should be in the historical archives of military service to this country. Until he turned traitor, he served with distinction.

Much like John McCain who also turned traitor.
Notwithstanding your absolutely bizarre comment about McCain, I agree that Benedict Arnold’s bust and portrait should be in basement archives along with the busts and portraits of traitors to the Union gathering dust and cob webs. Not in places that honor them.

Are you arguing there was no civil war or rebellion against the union?
No, he is arguing about the motive for why they went to war. Seemed pretty straight forward to Me.
They went to war against the union. They were traitors. Short and simple. Doc apparently sympathizes with traitors against the USA.
They went to war to defend their perceived rights. The argument can and has been made that it was the Union that went to war with them.

I sided with the Union in My analysis of what they did, but make no mistake. They did not go to war on the basis of what the left perceives as wrong.

Unless, of course; you perceive that the States have no rights in out Republic and that everything should be centralized to the Federal Government. In which case, YOU are an enemy of the Constitution. That makes YOU a traitor.

The states have all rights granted them under the Constitution of the USA. They do not have the right to rebel against the Union. If one rebels against the union and starts killing fellow Americans then that person is a traitor. This is not rocket science.

They had every right to protect their way of life and their base of power, which is what the original contention of the Civil War started off as.

The Southern States were trying to block the Nothern States from gaining a majority in Congress with the laws of keeping expansion away from slavery.

They perceived it as a direct threat against their way of life.

Regardless of what you or I think of slavery, even the North in those times, with the exception of the abolitionists, were not opposed to the concept of slavery or of giving the blacks equal rights.

Regardless, they did not do what they did out of treason, but a sense that they had the right under the Constitution. They were wrong, but I don't want to hear any more nonsense of assigning modern morays to a time that was very different from our own.

Yes, well history tells us the ones working against our republic were Lincoln and the union.

Putting up their portrait in a place of honor is celebrating someone.
It is acknowledging that they contributed. History can be or can't be a celebration of an event or a person, but WE do not destroy history because we are butt hurt.

Removing their portraits from a place of honor isn't "destroying" history. Those people whose portraits were removed are still in the books, just not hanging up in a place of honor.
Where no one can see or understand who they were and what they stood for.

Not a good plan.

As I said, the next SoH can simply put them back and hopefully, will pull down Pelsoi's.

After all, when it comes to purveyors of hate, the racists in the south can't hold a candle to her.

So what..Lincoln never said I’ll pardon confederates and then put them on a pedestal. By the way Billy thanks for the link to the Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction because it only proves my point that in the view of Lincoln the confederates were traitors to the union and only strengthens, not weakens, Pelosi’s actions.

Part of the preamble reads as follows“

‘Whereas a rebellion now exists whereby the loyal State governments of several States have for a long time been subverted, and many persons have committed and are now guilty of treason against the United States; “

A pardon is granted to those confederates who take a loyalty oath to the union with the exception that these confederate traitors would not be granted a pardon:

“The persons excepted from the benefits of the foregoing provisions are all who are, or shall have been, civil or diplomatic officers or agents of the so-called confederate government; all who have left judicial stations under the United States to aid the rebellion; all who are, or shall have been, military or naval officers of said so-called confederate government above the rank of colonel in the army, or of lieutenant in the navy; all who left seats in the United States Congress to aid the rebellion; all who resigned commissions in the army or navy of the United States, and afterwards aided the rebellion; and all who have engaged in any way in treating colored persons or white persons, in charge of such, otherwise than lawfully as prisoners of war, and which persons may have been found in the United States service, as soldiers, seamen, or in any other capacity.”

As is clear confederate politicians or military leaders were never granted a blanket pardon.

Democrats haven't changed a bit. They didn't respect the Constitution then, and don't respect it now.

Let's erase all bad history, slavery, Hitler ect... so in a generation or two we can repeat it again. Leftists never think beyond what they feel at any given minute. The death and destruction they have caused over the years is there for all to see.
