We've had lasers for over 50 years. Reason they haven't replaced bullet firing guns is lasers suck as weapons.

A laser beam burns through a target, which takes some amount of time. And travelling through the air it'll be impeded by every droplet of moisture and speck of dust limiting it's range and dispersing the beam. Clouds, fog, smoke will prevent lasers mounted on aircraft or satellites completely.

Lasers are excellent for target designators, range finders, and some non-weapon applications. But as 'death rays' they absolutely suck.
