so if these 6 year olds aren’t bigots why do you feel you need to teach them not to be bigoted…maybe focus on teaching them reading and writing and once they learn those basics they can discuss social issues in middle and high school

To get kids to learn to read, you have provide them with material that are interested in. 3rd graders are not interested in a character who has two women who both call themselves her mommy.

At that age, I read a Romona the Pest story about a kindergarten girl whose teacher said "sit here for the present," and she refused to move from the chair all day so she would get the present. It taught age appropriate lessons about homonyms, about miscommunication, about overcoming anxiety in school, and at the same time was good reading practice.

As I said, the proponents of this don't really believe that third graders are intolerant of same-sex marriage. They think "too many" parents are, so they want to "correct" that. Try putting that on the ballot next time a district asks for a bond issue: "This money will be used to inoculate your students from your bigotry," and see how many votes that gets.

People do get upset when their bigotry of others is exposed. What happened when the government told states they must treat all students the same? The government had to send in troops to enforce it.
