Russia and Georgia had fucked up relations since the end of USSR. There is no difference in what Russians did in Abkhazia and South Ossetia from what they did in Crimea. So, you can't really cry about Georgia without mentioning Ukraine. Oh, Ukraine happened under Obama, so it's perfectly OK.

IMHO, there was possible deal, they let us play without interruption in their backyard (Afghanistan and Iraq), we let them play elsewhere. My point above is, Russia was much closer to us during Bush, then it is now. They were willing to work with us, but not anymore.

If it is in ISIS-held territory, it seems rather short-sighted. How will they transport the oil once they claim the territory?

Well, I'd suggest that the whole invasion of Georgia thing was pretty major...especially when it happened while Bush was at the summer Olympics sitting next to Putin and other world leaders.
